Locating objects from details lines

What role do detail lines play in modifying the location of pipe and/or equipment in Revit MEP 2013? I noticed that if I place a detail line near a section of pipe and then click on the pipe, a dimension line from the pipe to the detail line appears.

When you select an element, shows the temporary dimensions to the nearest element. If you want Revit to use a different element, you can pull the witness line of the dimension to another element, and Revit should remember it, and use that element in the future.
