Duct Connector - extension Elbow

We have set up some mechanical equipmet with ductwork connectors.  When we try to extend the ductwork to connect to other equipment Revit seems to put a 3' straight perpendictular extension in the line of hte connector.  Is there a way to have the connector start with an elbow?

Not automatically. You will have to create the Duct with the straight segment and elbow, delete the unwanted segment, and then select and drag the elbow by the Connector to manually connect it to the Mechanical Equipment.
