Device symbols/generic annotations

I have created several electrical fixtures (receptacles, switches, tele/data, security). I was shown the way to do this is to create the element and bring in a generic annotation with the old autocad symbol in it. So I have the element lets say a receptacle with a generic annotation imported into the family for the symbol. Now when I am working in revit and I want to change the color of receptacles to be different from tele/data symbols how do I do that? Since all symbols are generic annotations? This also gives me problems when plotting since I can't make device categories plot differently if needed.

Should I instead have created the elements with the symbols drawn directly in the family? Would this have allowed me to make the receptacle green and switches cyan etc...?

In the anno go to object styles and create a subcategory.
