Cant align

Hi all, I have a duct tap that I am trying to load in a coupling to. In the family editor, I can swap out the coupling, change sizes turn the volume damper on or off and everything works and adjusts properly, however, when I load it into a project the coupling jumps 7" away from the tap for no apparent reason? I tried loading it into  a blank project and I get similarly poor, yet different results where it seems to just not want to adjust to the bead when the volume damper is removed, and is left "floating" in space. Any ideas how I can fix this? Also, is there a way for this fitting to "know" the size duct it taps into per instance?
