Build Families not read by Systems?

Hi,

I'm trying to take a file drawn with Build, that has user created electrical devices added to the family, and when opened in
Systems, be able to use those devices with the "Create Power Circuit" feature.

I have loaded the devices from the Systems imperial library into the Build file, and if I insert any of those and select them, the
option is there to create the circuit, but if I select any of the existing "old" recepts in the file the option to create circuits
is not there.

Is there a way to get Systems to read these devices, I have gone through the tutorials and help files and can't seem to find
anything.

Thanks in advance,
John Henry

Hi John -

There is a difference in the families that come with Revit Building and
those that come with Revit Systems. There is additional data in the Systems
families that enable the behavior you are looking for. The data that needs
to be added is in the form of a "connector" object that gets added to the
family definition. The connector tells the familiy how it can be connected,
such as specifying the voltage, # of poles, power consumption and a few
other things. If you insert one of the "working" families that comes with
systems and click the "Edit Family" button on the options bar, this will
open family editor and you will see the connector on the family.

You should be able to add connectors to the "non-functioning" families (Used
Edit Family and add an electrical connector, then specify the connector
properties similar to the way they are done in the familys than come with
Systems) and get the same behavior.

Hi,

I seem to be missing something.

I have added the connector and properties to an RB recept, and the connector shows up when I add the recept into the drawing, but
the create circuit option does not appear on the option bar. If I right click the connector it gives me the option to create
circuit, but nothing happens after that, there is no option to connect to a panel.

One other thing, there is a difference in dialog box appearance between the two recepts, the RS recept has an "Electrical" category
in the Type Properties for switch voltage and load, the RB recept doesn't have that, but I was able to add that info by right
clicking the connector while in the Edit Family. Either way, it shows the same for both in the "Electrical-Loads" section of Element
Properties.

Thanks again,
John

The stuff in the Electrical category was added to the RS receptacle when the
content was created. If the connector parameters are not "mapped" to a
family parameter the circuit won't be successfully created as the circuit
wouldn't know how to behave when these parameters were changed. You can add
new parameters to the RB family using the "Family Types" command from the
options bar and then "map" (the the little button next to the connector
parameters) the parameters on the connector to the new family parameters
that you have created.

Jason,

When I add the parameter in "Family Types", it prompts for the value in watts units, if I enter the info in volts it gives me an
error message: "Enter a value or a formula starting with =". (Note: the Systems receptacle has the units in volts)

Also, I'm not seeing the little button to "map" the connector parameters, could you use a screen capture to illustrate this so that
I know I'm in the right place.

Thanks,
John
