work at home with worksets

does anyone know of or have heard of any firms that "sub out" part of their project work via revit worksets?

how would you do that? Your sub would have to have direct network access to
your central file.

just have the work delivered on floppies by camel
to the central file- forget wireless or cable or phone
lines..

if you want to know how worksharing and worksets
work you can go to the autodesk site and see white
papers for this.. it explains all about working as a team
with team members of all types and locations..

Vector 1,
Just so you know - Scott Davis (and others not limited to the likes of Aaron
Rumple, SDBrown, Steve Stafford) happens to be one of the Guru's on this
site.

Though camels and floppies may not be out of the realm of feasibility, the
question he posed was one of practicality, given that frequent updates to
the central file are usually required - typically "via direct network
access."

i just do it like autodesk says to do it..
they say if you need constant direct
access to the central file you can use a
vitrual private network from any location..
they also say it works just fine having
someone at the office publish the work
to the central file and returning it via email,
disk or whatever.. i'm just looking for
someone that has experience with this..
many people working on a project as a team
from many locations is what revit is really all about..
if you are from the old school of computer aided
drawing or hand drawing you would natually
envision team members gathering outside of the
office while they tie up their horses..
now that we have someones' attention on the
subject of revit worksharing why don't we share
some ideas on how it's being used.. thank you

your best best is to use remote access. Run the app from the host netork,
and work on files that are on that network. You still must give a sub
access to your files and your network.

VPNs are just too slow to work effectively on a workset project. Will it
work? sure. Will you pull your hair out waiting? yes.

Emailing files is dangerous, and ill cause problems. I could create a local
file from the central file, and email it to someone....AT RISK. At risk
that no one else working on the project happens to touch an object that was
in the emailed file. Basically, this will ONLY work if everyone else halts
work until the email file is returned and checked back in.

Riverbed and other hardware "network accelerator devices" can work
sometimes.

The only current way to effectively use worksets is to use a central file
and local files on the same local area network.

thanks for all the great ideas.. and i want to analyze
all of them ..
when you consider revit as one big package
program for completing all the tasks associated
with a large building project (electrical, structural,
massing, modelling etc. etc.) it's obvious that all
this talent is not going to be in the same office..
therefore access to the central file (either directly
or indirectly) has to be a master key..
new remote desktop version 6.0 -
bypass the desktop with direct access to the application..
gotta check this out.. thank you thank you
keep the ideas coming on this please..

Worksets over VPN work just fine. Like others have mentioned, it is optimal for local & central files to be on the same LAN (local area network). However, you can use a WAN (wide area network) to utilize worksets. You have a few things to consider.

1. Bandwith. Upload speeds AND download speeds.
2. Hard drive speed (locally & server)
3. Server speed

Also try to isloate project servers from high traffic areas from your office network. Also make sure your home router allows for IPSec and VPN pass-through. Also make sure your corporate firewall gives some elevated priority to data packets that are being transferred by end-users who are working from home.

We got ours to work, but it took some tweaking of our firewalls to make it run smoothly.
