What is the best way to convert 2D CAD drawings to 3D Revit model

As you can see in the title, I'm just wondering the best and easies way to convert 2D AutoCAD drawings to 3D Revit models.

If I have to convert just one, I willingly spend time for it.

But my company has over 100 buildings to move onto 3D BIM world.

Thank you,

JINHOON LEE

This one is super simple.

When you say "2D AutoCAD drawings" to Revit models, you are

probably talking about floorplans. I would guess that about 95% of

the time, an architect will draw or sketch a 2D floorplan of the house

or building before anything starts in Revit.

This is exactly what I do in my work everyday. I take sketches/drawings,

(usually hand drawings, same as AutoCAD), and begin a Revit model.

Most of the time the sketch has dimensions on ever facet of the floor plan.

And in that case I attach the drawing so it sits on top of my monitor. This

gives me easy viewing of the drawing for reference.

Theoretically if you had two monitors you could open the CAD drawing

so it appeared on one monitor while you started your Revit project from

it on another monitor.

Sometimes I get a drawings that are just a shape of something with no

dimensions. And in that case I make a JPEG image of it and bring it

into Revit as a "background" image and scale it and trace over it. After

I'm finished tracing it, I will remove the image and begin adjusting the

dimensions of the different shapes of the thing.

Maybe you can get the idea from there?

There's no way to "convert" a CAD file directly to a Revit model.  You can link in various CAD files (plans, sections, elevations, details, etc.) to a Revit project, but you'll just be using them as underlays.  You'll have to rebuild the entire building from scratch if you want a native Revit project.

If you're interested in farming out some of this work, feel free to PM me.

Actually, I'm wondering any automated ways.

As I said, I have more than 100 buildings.

If I have to follow either of your ways, it may takes 2 years to comple to transfer all of my 2D CAD drawings to 3D REVIT model.

I hope somebody develope a kind of API which generate a 3D model from 2D CAD drawings (floorplan+elevation view+etc.)

I appreciate for your advice.

There is not enough information in a 2-D drawing in order to create the Revit model automatically. Like others have stated you can bring the autocad drawing in as a background but you will have recreate the building in Revit. If the buildings have been built I guess you can get a laser scan done which will give you a 3-D image from which you can start a Revit model or have a third party  service prepare revit models from your autocad drawings.

I am interested in farming out this work and converting to Revit 2013.

How do we get started?

Thank You,

A CAD file cannot be converted to Revit model directly. One can only link the file in the plan, elevation, section and details of a CAD file to a construction project in Revit and can use it as underlay. We can take the line as a reference for creating wall in Revit through ‘Walls from DWG’ add-in tool but we can’t convert a line to a wall in Revit. If you need a native Revit project, you have to rebuild your construction from the scratch.

Try Enr3D. Not tested it yet myself, but it seems promising.

My company developed Revit plugins to convert 2D CAD shop drawing to 3D revit model。 It supports Walls、Columns、windows、doors、grids、Pipes、Duct、cabletray、fittings。

It can convert a full drawing in batches.  It has been using by more than 100000 users in China for 8 years by far.

However, The UI ONLY supports Chinese  right now.    Probably we might release English version in future.
