Use instance parameter to resize family geometry

Is it possible to use instance parameters to scale family geometry in Revit Building 8?

I created an existing tree family that I would like to use for a tree removal plan. The city requires recompense for trees removed or that have more than 25% of their root zone disturbed. The recompense is based on the trunk diameter. Also, the root zone can be derived from the trunk diameter.

I would like the family types to be the species of the trees only and not a combination of species and diameter. I would like the diameter to be controlled by an instance parameter. But to determine if my building disturbs more than 25% of the root zone, I need the geometry of the family to be scaled according to the diameter instance parameter. Is this possible? I have been unsuccessful so far.

If not, then I have to create a type for each combination of species and trunk diameter. That's 50 types for some species like oaks (red oak 6", red oak 7", red oak 8",... water oak 6", water oak 7", etc.). The list of types in a family could be very long.

What I'd like to do is choose a species type from the existing tree family, place it, and then enter its trunk diameter. Then place another instance of the same species type, enter its trunk diameter, and have the 2 trees of the same type with different sized geometry. Is it possible or is there a better way of doing this?

Set up you tree family with types that correspond to species. However make
tree size a type parameter as well. While in the family environment do not
pre-populate family with various tree sizes. After loading family in project
you can make new types that combine species and size on as needed basis
(right click the type of desired species and select new type, then modify
size parameter). You will end up with much fewer types and if you schedule
your trees then Revit will compute totals of each size/species combination.

I really appreciate your suggestion. I'll do it that way.
