There is a circular chain of references among the highlighted elements! FIX?

I have been getting "There is a circular chain of references among the highlighted elements." The past couple days and I would like to know once you find the in my case a wall what do you do to fix that circular reference error? Would be nice for the message to tell you what to do to fix it?

Thanks

I have only gotten that message when trying to host something in a stacked
wall. If you try to place it in the host stacked wall, you get the error.
If you TAB to select the nested wall type, it should place just fine.

We have the sweep in the stacked wall type and we have 3 or 4 different sweeps and was trying to duplicate a stack wall to change one of the thk. of the sweep and will not let me?

You might be trying to set another stacked wall type as one of the nested
walls. Make sure you use individual basic wall types within the stacked
wall.

I'll make a note on my stcked wall sheets thats a good tip of not to do!

I started out with one stacked wall and have been making 2 more from that one stacked wall by duplicating it to another name? Not sure if that is what is erroring out but they seem to work until now?

Thanks for the tip!

I found that if you name one of the walls the same as the material you get the circular reference. I simply placed the thickness of the wall in the name of it and the reference went away.

Got the same error on my walls and on my floors. I had wall sweeps and slab edges added to them prior tho. By deleting all of them (select one then use right click then all similar in project, jus pree, it deh deh, the when all is selected just press delete). Now attempt making your adjustment again using usual procedure, you should be error free. Bless up. One love. Let me know if it helps

This thread is over eleven years old, I certainly hope that the OP has found a solution since then.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Project probably went on hold because they could not get around the error. Now they can start it back up again.  Smiley Happy

I've been getting the same error however I've been getting it when trying to change the material of a roof fascia, I've tried simply painting it, I've tried duplicating the type and editing it but I still get the error.

I wonder if this has been seen to in the meantime. Does not help me today though.

I resolved my case of this issue by cutting out (ctrl+x) the highlighted part, deleting the stubborn bit that wouldn't get deleted before and then pasting (ctrl+v) the previously cut part back in again.

In my case, I wasn't able to modify the alignment or delete the wall.  But it was solved by converting the Stacked wall into a Basic wall and finally modify it and reconvert it into Stacked Wall.

I created an in-place component, assigned as floor, and modeled it using an extrusion. Copied this so there were two.

On the first one, I created a sweep along one edge (a bull rail). Joined the floor and the sweep, worked fine.
On the copied component, the sweep would not join. "circular" error.
I "cut" (control-x) the sweep, then pasted same place, and then they joined just fine.

Voodoo magic. I'm glad I found this ancient thread...
