System Families .rte

I am quite sure that creating a system family .rte from scratch is not permitted, only their types can be edited, cancelled and modified (into a project, not using the family editor) to suit your requirement.
Am I right?

You are correct.  System families only exist in a project, and cannot be saved out to an RFA file or edited in the Family Editor.  In addition to the options you listed, in a project file you can also duplicate an existing system family type, and then edit the duplicated type.

There is a workaround though. At least I have used it for walls, ceilings and floors: http://do-u-revit.blogspot.co.at/2008/04/family-template-for-system-families.html They might not exactly behave the same as a "in project" system family. Jens Voshage
