Stair riser heights

How can you adjust the preset 7" riser height (National code) with a 7-3/4" riser height (Vermont code)?

Revit is trying to keep you out of trouble so do the following to see the results:

Test in a new project so your floor to floor height is 10'.

1. Click Home > Stair

2. Click Edit Type (before you draw your stair)

3. Scrool down to Riser and change the Maximun Riser Height to 7 ¾” > click OK

4. Draw you Run of stair > click Finish Edit Mode

Draw a section through your stair and note that the riser distance is 7 ½” with 16 risers . Clearly this is not 7 ¾” , but keep in mind that Revit is calculating the distance between the floors, dividing that number by the riser hight you choose and coming up with the resulting stair run. Since you set the maximum riser height of 7 ¾” it will not go over that height.

This time do the same as above but change the max riser hgt to 8”. Draw you run of stair and check the riser hgt. You will notice that this time Revit gave you your riser height of 8” but it now only needed 15 risers to go floor to floor. Again, not the correct results, but just as close in the wrong direction. In this case you will never get your desired 7 ¾” riser height as the application cannot build a stair that will go floor to floor in any combination of changer you make. Your contractor will be doing the same thing in the field as he/she does not want to build a no-complient stair. What you can do is set the start and finsh points and make sure that your stair does not go over the Vermont state building code. However, if this is new construction you could alter the floor to floor distance so you can nail that 7 ¾” riser, but I’m guessing you won’t! By the way that distance is 10’ – 4” for a run of stair with 16 risers @ 7 ¾” each.

Hope this helps and thanks for posting.
