Split face selection

Whenever try to select an object (like wall) on it's edges for the split face command, I get this Error message :

The closed loop used to split the face must lie completely within the face and cannot intersect or overlap any of the face's edges. To split a face at its border, use an open loop that ends on the boundary of the face.

Yes. Those are the rules.

Please see attached image.

The third picture shows a common mistake. You draw a line between the two perpendicular walls of a room in an interior elevation, thinking that it should split the face but it does not split. The reason is that the wall you are trying to split does not end at the intersection of those perpendicular walls, but extends some feet away to the right or the left, but you can't see that in an interior elevation.
