Software fore the Mac

Can you tell me why AutoDesk does not produce their software for the Mac platform? I am purchasing a new computer system before the end of the year. I am an architecture student and need to use AutoDesk software. I am interested in buying a mac but am deterred because Autodesk doesn't create the software for it. Are the reasons technical or political or both? Thank You Sincerely,

If you need to use Autodesk software, you need to purchase a PC. Far too
many people buy hardware, then try to match the software--wrong way to go
about it.
At one time, Autodesk did sell Mac versions. If it was financially sound,
I'm sure they would still be doing it today. Autodesk is in business to make
a profit, I'll say no more.
I only use PC's in my architectural work. I do use a Mac for video
creation/projection for my church. The software excells in that area, so a
Mac made sense (a PC could have been used, but the Mac had an edge in this
area).
Determine what tasks you need the computer for, then determine the software
you need, then pick your hardware. It's the only wise way to go about it.

...or wait and see what Apple comes up with for the Intel chip systems in
2006.

I don't believe that will have any effect on the software that can be run on a Mac. What they are doing is making the Mac OS work with the Intel chip instructions.

A present day analogy would be you can currently run Windows on and Intel chip you can also currently run any flavor of Linux you want on that same Intel chip, yet Windows based software will not run under Linux nor will Linux based software run under Windows, although both are using the Intel chip. Thus, with a Mac OS running on an Intel chip you cannot expect to run Windows based software on that Mac.

Now to the root of the question, I have over a years time working with ArchiCAD and would never go back to it. Read their forum sometime and you will see why. 70% of their questions are not answered with here is how to use the tool you are working with, more like here is how you "trick or workaround" this limitation. There is not even a tape measure tool. You must set a user origin to one point and then click another point. Things we take for granted that Revit does you must buy separate add-on software for to do with ArchiCAD, well at least do easily. What happens when the next version of ArchiCAD comes out will your add-ons still work? Will the add-on supplier still be in business, if not do you become a programmer and make your own add-on or become a GDL programmer. You think that family editor is difficult, I don't, try to become a programmer to work with the GDL ArchiCAD uses to create parametric objects.

Buy a nice PC / Revit and never look back.

Cheers

No, but the hope is that you'll be able to dual boot OS X and Windows on the
same system.

Not quite 100% true. Wine provides a compatibility layer for running Windows
programs on Linux (Open Source and not an emulator.). They're web site lists
which apps run with this module. There is also VMWare, Win4Lin and other
solutions. On the Mac side there is Virtual PC.

It wouldn't surprise me if OS X had a nice task switching function built in
to OS X to flip between OS X and Windows running on the same system after
the Intel based Macs are on the street.

True Wine can run some apps., but Wine needs to have a lot of tweaking to run complicated apps such as a CAD program. Yes it will run MS Office and some versions of Photoshop now, but that is due to user demand and a lot of effort on the part of the developers. I don't think there has been much progress on their end to run AutoCAD or ArchiCAD so it is unlikely to run Revit and even more unlikely on a sustained basis if Wine must keep current with new Revit releases.

That would be nice is Macs could dual boot on the Intel chip. As for using a emulator, VM Ware, that is a memory hog would Revit perform well in this instance?

Not to be negative I would get the nice PC / Revit and never look back. Remember the right tool for the right job. Macs for visualization and graphics, PC for Revit.

Cheers -

P.S. I have been a Linux enthusiast for 5 years now
