slab depressions

I went to a users' groug the other day and found that I can create a "slab depression" in a slab by creating a void form in the slab family, then cutting geometry. Works great. In my 8" slab, I have a 1" depression. I can't dimension it unless I want a section. I can't do anything with this except just to look at it and go oooooo. I can't even put a spot elevation on it. For my purposes, do I have to create a hole in the 8" slab and then create a 7" slab inside of it, then hit join geometry?

Hi, You need to create your slab as a new Floor Family > Solid Form > Solid Extrusion, then create a Void Extrusion to build your slab set downs.
This form will dimension just fine.

If you add symbol lines or ref.planes you can dim to those.
