Go to plan view.
Choose Roof.
Roof by Footprint.
Select Pick Walls.
Enter value for Overhang.
Click on your 3 shed walls. (make sure Defines Slope is unchecked)
Select Lines.
Make 4th line of roof outline by connecting line across face of the vertical
wall of your building.
Select Slope Arrow.
Draw arrow from high side to low side.
Click on Arrow ...turns red.
Select properties tab (hand on pad icon)
Select your head and tail offsets (slope)
Select Finish.

David, This is great - because I can see I was trying some of the proper commands. However, this roof is covering an open area - it goes from the exterior wall of a model out to three support 6X6 post, so I don't have a "footprint". Would I connect the post with walls and after the roof is in place, remove the walls?
Thanks

Just use "Lines" instead of "Walls" to draw the outline.
You can in fact create a roof without anything under it.

On the opposite side from the shed roof, I want to extend the length of the rafters of the gable roof to form a shed at at the higher level of the gable. I can't find a way to extend the rafters on that one side.

draw the shape in plan that you want, the roof doesn't have to be just a box.

I wasn't very clear in the last post. I have a gable roof that has a shed roof attached to the east wall under the overhang - that started this off. On the west, I want to create another shed by simply extending that overhang to a line about 7'0" from the west wall. I can't make the extension.

And in creating the shed on the east, every time I try "Finish Roof" I get an error message. I try placing the tail of the arrow on the intended upper roof boundary. The error message says the slope arrow tail can't be in the boundaries of the slope - so I try to move it out of the sloped area and I get an error message that says slope arrow tail must be on a roof boundary. I must be interpreting something incorrectly.

make the sketch lines "slope defining" rather than using slope arrows. I
highly suggest doing the Tutorials in Help that deal with roof creation.

Conversely, when drawing your lines make sure that "defines slope" check box
is unchecked and use the slope arrow method. Scott's right...you can't have
it both ways...refer back to the first response. Look at your lines..if they
define slope, then you'll see a little angle icon next to them. You can
select the line and then uncheck the box.

Lines do not define slope > use slope arrow method
Lines define slope > do not use slope arrow method

I can't be lieve it - I got it to look what I wanted. I didn't undertand the slope defining lines. I figured the slope arrow problem i was having mihgt have someting to do with the slope symbols at each line, but I didn't know what to do to get rid of them! Thanks

Now - any thoughts on extending the sloped roof on one side of a gable. ( you will have to undertand I "coming off the boards."

Thanks again - George

Like Scott said...just define it with lines, it doesn't even have to
correspond with the building. If you have a roof already, go to plan, edit,
select and delete the lines that aren't working for you and draw in new
ones, finish sketch, finish roof. If that doesn't help....post a sketch of
what you're after.

You're certainly a patient person David. I finally got the extended roof to work as well, but I think I probably went around the barn to do it! However, I learned a few things during the trip. Thanks again,
George

Patient are those who helped me get started about this time last year. And
within a few months you'll be helping someone new to the program yourself.

Cheers,
