Revit Qty Take-offs

Often I bump into contractor who want to do a quantity take-offs. Is there a white paper on what are the different approaches available?

You don't need to know much. View->New->Material Takeoff...

i am aware of that command. The point I was raising is that one of the contractors wanted QTY takeoffs for studs, flashing etc etc.

Thats too inefficient to model.

So has the industry generated a white paper calling out the extent to be modelled

Can an *assembly* take-off (UniformatII vs. CSI)
be created as well?

I think you need to work with formulas. You don't have to model all the
studs to get quantity take-offs. You can use wall area and multiply it by
your stud center. I am working on this now and I will post some of my
findings.

How does it work?
Can you assign a $/SF to a wall family, for example?
Or is it more complicated than that?
Also, can these $ values be linked to an external database?
(like Timberline, for example...)
So someone, outside of REvit, can update these values,
and it will affect your Revit costs realtime?

Please do!

you can export your Revit database out as an ODBC or use a 3rd party
application like Visual Estimating to link your Revit model (exported as a
dwf or dwg) to Timberline. I'll post some examples of take-offs later this
week. I have only done a couple so I wouldn't want to confuse anyone.

Innovaya Visual Estimating is definitely the way to go. It offers many features on the cost estimating side you will never get from Revit. Furthermore, if you are a little dangerous with Revit and have Innovaya you can tweak your models to get exactly what you want.
