Revit - Project Size

Hello,

My firm is interested in switching from regular old autocad to a BIM software system.

My question is: those of you who are currently using Revit, what are the size of your projects? Are they residential, are they 100,000 s.f. plus? Are they prototypes or organic shape designs?

In general, any input on the transition is helpful!!

Thanks

As always, size matters but Revit can handle big buildings. It need some
modeling tools but it can do almost everything. I think you will find
perfect examples in AUGI forums too.

ALL of the above.

Residential, commercial, hospital... We are doing them all.
Very successfully and with a minimum of downtime. Success is in the planning and implementation. Do this correctly and you can't go far wrong

I'm currently working on a very complex 16 story hotel tower with rooftop pools and full interiors. The model is big 200,000mb but still runs ok. Utilizing worksets is the key.

We are currently doing a Industrial facility that is 550,000 sf. We have
had minimal issues, other than novice mistakes. File Size is broken up into
7 models, and they average about 40mb each.

There's no getting away from it: a developed Revit model is BIG. However, a friend's wife is a graphic designer and routinely manages image files that are 300-500mb without too many hassles. The most effective way to manage big files is to use Worksets and only load the data you are currently working on.

A single Revit file can be large, however when compared to the number of files it takes to put together a dwg set, its very close to the same if not less. I was working in Adobe indesign this weekend and only 6 pages was allready 150mb so size is all relative.

200K Mb - Holy Revit, Batman!

I wasn't disagreeing, just pointing out that the files are large. Also, one issue with having everything in the one file is it's a lot of data to lose in one hit if the file goes down.

Has anyone ever run into that problem? Loss of all information by having a rvt file "go down".

Thanks, Wesley

Nope. If a file were to fail, there are backups. Then our network is
backed up nightly, so there are backups of backups. Then there is Revit
Support, which can fix problems if they are to occur. We have never had an
issue with loss of data.

You would really have to set yourself up to lose more than a few hours of work in revit. If you set your backups to just one and corrupted an element and saved and reopend, crashed again an saved you could mess it up but adsk could probably fix it. But to be on the safe side, just keep the backups set to 10-20 or in worksets you allways have local files to fall back on if anything happend to the central.
