revit arch2008, mep and structural

when you are doing the arch, mep and structural in the same firm, what is procedure to work.
the arch has a central file on the server, does the mep and structural need to xref link or do i need to make a separate copy file of it and work on that.
thanks
if you know the answer and care to leave a contact email address it would be appreciated.

If all disciplines are in one office and have access to the server where the
central file is stored, then one central file for all disciplines can be
used. You would probably want to create at least one workset per discipline
to make working in the file easier.

im a bit confused by this becuase i thought that the Structural had to have their own file. remeber their slab is not the same as the arch slab and that goes for columns too!!!

have Architects and Structural in-house. We've done one project with both
disciplines in one file. It's a little cumbersome to say the least but workable.
You will need to setup worksets accordingly. Since then each discipline keeps
their own central file and link the others central file into their own file. I
would recommend all three disciplines keep their own file and if need be link in
the others. The file size will be smaller. If your structural
department uses a third party product such as Risa 3d or Risa Floor etc
that import/export will be smother. One thing that is a little tricky is the
copy/monitor feature. You need to make sure your bearing walls in the
architectural file are set to structural combined.
