Revit 2013 crashes when attemting to opne existing project

I have the full Revit (inc. MEP, structural and arch) and since there isn't a "Revit" section, I thought posting here.

Everything works fine, I can open the previously opened projects or the sample projects (the ones that show up on the screen). I also can open up families. BUT when I try to open a project by either clcikcing "OPEN" (see attached screenshot) or via the file menu, Revit crashes (not responding...) when it is supposed to bring up the folders to search for files.

The only way to workaround is to go to the "R" and "open" "any Revit file". I googled for it and didn't see anyone else having the problem.

I assume it is an IT problem here because: my old PC (only had 4 GB) had the same problem and I thought it was because of lack of memory. and at home on my PC I installed Revit to try this problem, it works. (and no, our IT is not helpful with things like that). but now I have a 24 GB PC with 3.6 GHz quadcore... so power shouldn't be the problem. but i have the standalone license and the project being on the network isn't the problem since it crashes already before picking a project, and with my workaround it works.

Any idea what could cause this and how to resolve? Apparently i can open my projects with the workaround, or once they show up in the selection of previous projects. Really where it hangs is whne it supposedly opens the folder structure to pick a project. i can open families without problem. (it is not one of those file format problems with 203/2012 files etc.)

Thanks

How did you install Revit? from a download?

Do you have only Revit 2013 installed or do you have Autocad as well?

Please try the following:

1. Create a new user account on your computer and give it administrator rights, then log into that user account and launch Revit 2013 and see if the same issue happens under that user account.

2.Update the drivers of your video graphics card

3.Do a repair of the install.

Please check out the suggestions on this link:

Thanks for the suggestions. i can't create different user accounts (it is done when i login in  our network). i had installed it multiple times (file from the actual stick they send) etc. so this isn't the issue. I meanwhile got help from the support and had updated all drivers etc. They say it is a known issue they are working on.

They gave me some workarounds that work till autodesk fixes that (i can open file directly from a folder, or drag a file to the Revit desktop icon). so there is nothing i can do to fix, but can live with it till they fix it.

Maybe this problem is limited to the new "full Revit" (the version with MEP, Arch and structure included) since my google search didn't reveal this problem. who know...

I am having somewhat the same problem. We have 52 workstations with multiple users on each system in an educational institution. Things where working for little over a month. Now people seem to be having the problem when they click Open from the R or click Open Project the program sit there busy and becomes unresponsive. The only work around I have found is first click open family then close the open family dialog. The open project then works and the Open from the R also works. Opening a project file directly from windows exploroer or sliding it onto the desktop icon ends up with the same problem, an unresposive program.

Things I have tried which did not work.

-Used another account.

-Removed the account profile.

-Used a different system.

I have one system which I make my images from which has been off for a month and Revit is still working like it should.

my new issue and workaround is that when i open files from the starts screen, it tells me that an error occurred while drawing of this window (s. attached screenshot).  After that it crashes.

the only workaround is to open Revit, go to options and look at Graphics properties. My hardware acceleration is disabled, but for some reason I need to look at options before opening a file. then close options and it works,

not sure why it needs that workaround of just looking at the options (not actually changing anything). i cna live with it.. but question the program.

I'm having the same problems as listed above. Whenever I try to open a file, family, or revit project, the software crashes. I'm not getting any error messages. My workaround has been to open files directly from explorer. Has this problem been resolved?

For me it hasn't been resolved. but in a few weeks 2014 is coming out, so this hopefully will get better.

In addition to this, I always have to do the procedure to go to options and just look at the graphics options (graphics acceleration is disabled). If i don't do that, it wil not render the model and crash. No idea why it is picky on me jsut going into the options without changing anything.

I did try that with the approved graphics driver from Adesk, the newest from Nvidia, reinstalling Revit multiple times... nothing seems to help. I had isntalled it at home and it worked flawlessly. both have W7 64-bit. At home 16 GB RAM, at work 24 GB of RAM, thsi hsoudl be enough to open my projects proeprly. I assume we have some IT setting at work that is in conflict. But only in conflict with Adesk.

Well, lets see if 2014 works better, for now I just live with it.

I am having same problem described above. Just started happening yesterday at first startup. No issues prior to this. Worked perfectly the night before. I made no known changes to system or programs to cause problem. Virus check found none. Any resolution found yet?

Check for windows Updates. I do know that there was a Platform Windows update at the end of Feb. that caused a lot of problems with my PC and other products that I use. I simply uninstalled that update and have had not further issues. Just my 2 cents....

I ran the installer and chose REPAIR which took care of the problem - for a couple of days, then it started to crash again. I then uninstalled the whole thing and re-installed. So far so good. It's been a couple of weeks now and everything is still fine. Knock on wood. Good luck!

Thanks to all for the input and suggestions. I ended up uninstalling and re-installing. It works fine for now. We'll see if it continues good as the days go by. Sent from my iPhone

I have a user with the same problem as the original post.  I have confirmed that it only affects this user/logon account.  If I try another user on his computer there is no problem.  If he logs into another computer the problem follows him (we have roaming profiles).  I have tried all the suggestions but nothing has helped.  In this case clicking any of the Open links - project, family, file, from the home page or the R menu - causes the issue.

Does anyone know of a way to reset the AutoDesk/Revit portion of a user's account?

FWIW - after clicking Open and the program stops responding to mouse clicks I can press Alt-C and the program will start responding again.

This is happening to me too now, but i believe that my windows 8.1 update is the problem possibly? after i updated it, it deleted my serial number and i have been having issues with it ever since. It just opens, and then closes 5 seconds later. I have found sucess opening my projects with revit view, which somehow opens up the normal revit and from there i can then work on my projects. PLEASE HELP ME, college student who needs to get his work done

I still have the same issue from whne i posted originally. I now have a new PC (32 GB, dual qad CPU) and REvit 2014 with all service packs.

the only way I can open a REvit file is whne i use the Windows eplorer and click on the file.

This is great so far. But now I started to use cntral/local files and the only way to open a cnetral file (to creat elocal file) is supposed to be through the "open""  function in Revit. which is what doesn't work.

So now I'm back trying to resolve my problem, or finding a different way to get the local file from a central file.

Ideally I find out how to open file out of Revit without crashing. But I also take a solution to create a local file in a different way.

The Feature (Open), uses Internet/Windows explorer to open up the file. So there is something related to this.

Sometime Third party software modifies the Windows file dialogs and this prevents Revit from interacting with these dialogs as expected

As a first step you could do is

Make sure your Internet Explorer (IE) is up to date, and make sure you set your IE as a default Web Broswer.

If by updating IE didn't reset or fix Windows file dialogs, you need to Invistigate which Third party is causing in it.

Please fallow these steps on this link to figure which Third party you need to disable to fix the issue

An alternative way to create an local file is copy the central file in your local computer rename it and open it, it will become local that could be synch with the main central file.

thanks for the repsonse. i went through the steps to no avail.

I also checked if any of the "PC backup" etc. services are isntalled (none were).

The only thing I couldn't do was using IE 11. Our company has some services that don't run on IE 11 (my time sheet for example) and they don't support IE 11. So I'm stuck with IE 9. But my colleague next cubiclehas IE 9 as well and doesn't have my problem. IE 9 is up to date (if you can call a 2 generations old browser up to date).

I think the only thing I can do is manually opening the central file and manually save as local file as you suggest. The problem is, when I open the central file, it crashes when I use "save as". This only happens with the central file. When I open a "normal file" (without work sharing) I can use "save as" with no problem.

I'll try a repair install. I'm shy to re-install Revit because when I got my new PC it wouldn't install propelry first and IT had to try out all kinds of things for over a day.

you could always Reset your Revit from you current user via REGEDIT

https://chronicle.autodesk.com/Main/Details/6069434e-3ed2-4a10-b182-a3d16eeb6292

Try to logoff and ask another user to login to your computer and see if Open works

For my co-worder (who logged in as himself) that did not work. Still crashes when "open file" from within Revit.
