Retaining content modifications

When migrating from one release to another Revit always brings in a new set of the standard content files.  I have changed many of these families to meet my office standards and want to keep these changes.  Is there an easy way to do this.

I am also concerned that the new content may have functionality that would be beneficial and if I just copy over the new file with my older edited file I will loose this new info.

You can migrate content over to a new version of Revit with very little trouble. You'll just need to "upgrade" the files which is simply when you open the file in the new version and then save it in the new version.

As for new functionality, families are usually very similar from year to year (with the exception of RPC content).
