Print to PDF issues

So I've had this issue for about a month now, Revit crashes when I attempt to create a PDF of a certain floor, and only that floor. No issues creating PDF's for any other floor, view, section, anything. I even went as far as making a copy of the file and on the copy deleting everything else that exist except what I wanted to export...and it still crashes.

Any idea what can be going wrong?

Let’s start with the easy quick checks;

  • Does it crash when you try printing to a printer or just PDF?
  • Did you try a different PDF printer (CutePDF, CC PDF are both free, watch out for ad-bar installations)?
  • Did you try a different computer (if possible, you can install a Revit demo on another PC and check)?
  • Does it crash when the floor is in a sheet and/or by itself?
  • You tried copying the file but did you try copying the view?
    • Right click on the view and duplicate with details
    • Try Duplicating without details
  • Try the “Purge Unused” button in the “Manage” ribbon.

Now the more time consuming stuff;

  • In the “Manage” ribbon there is a button for “Warnings” try looking in there, you are going to have warnings and most of them are not the cause but 1 might be, try and find one that is on the affected floor.
    • Open the view that is the problem and close all other then go through the warnings till you find one that doesn’t say “There is no open view that shows any of the highlighted elements. Searching…”
  • Can you identify the exact item that is causing the crash?
    • Start by turning off all annotation and imported categories
    • If it still crashes try turning the view down to one single item type (walls are a good starting point) and add items until it starts crashing again.
    • If you find the item delete it and purge unused and see if it fixes the problem, you might have to reinsert this item or create a new family.
  • Last resort, start deleting and purging items until it stops crashing
    • No brainer save a copy of the file before you start
    • Try and delete anything that is only showing up on this floor (equipment and specific details), you can right click and "Select All Instances" "In Entire Project"
    • After every item or set of items “Purge Unused”, save and try printing. Save because you want to work your way back to an empty file.
    • When/if you find the problem item you will probably have to recreate the family from scratch, try opening the family and set the parameters to the same as you project and see if you can still print.

9 times out of 10, this is due to an irregular crop region around one or more of the views on that sheet, especially if the crop region has been modified to include curves.  Try resetting the crop region of all views to simple rectangles, and try printing to PDF again.

If you really need to have a portion of the view not display, you can always use the masking-region-island technique.  Draw a masking region that covers the entire view, but make its border with invisible lines, then, while still in sketch mode, draw the outline that you want to use to represent the boundaries of the view.  This will essentially cut a hole in the masking region.  Just make sure the boundary of the hole is set to a non-invisible linetype.
