Painting a portion of a face of a beam or column

Is there any way to paint a portion of a face of a beam or column? By this, I mean something like what is possible using the split face command on walls.

I know this is odd, but for eg. if there is a very wide column common to two different rooms, half of the transverse edges may be required in two different materials.

It is possible for Architectural columns, but not for structural columns.

So you can use an architectural column or otherwise "encase" the structural column in a architectural column.

What about beams? That's a larger concern..

For beams it is the same as structural column. Painting is not possible. Therefore you would have to look at different options.

You could modify the beam family and add a layer to the beam family. This layer you can control with parameters.

You could create a new family that you would lay over the beam.
