Core 2 Duo machines E6600 - frankly minimum required due to revit 9.1 and older running like a dog
2Gig ram - technically its enough but looking at going to 4Gigs to avoid the problem below ( really doubt the 2G is used up at all, normally off the previous versions it would equate to around 350M? to 600M? used)

It was due to an upgrade from 9.1 to 2008 running out of memory.
Reopened file again and this was fine.
We found that we needed the 3Gig switch after a file size of 170MB. Or you
can break out your file into a few pieces.
