Opening in Railing

I have a tall railing, and I need to create an opening through it (railing still connected/solid on the top, but has a 3-sided opening in the bottom.)

How can this be accomplished? I can get the "opening" tool to create one within a wall, but not a railing. It's really annoying to have to create a new railing profile to finish out the top portion (and you see the lines where they connect).

Any suggestions?

I think you would need to model that part of the railing as a model in place, with extrusions representing the balusters, and with a void.
