Define parameter ProgramArea of type Area and Calculated Value
AreaDifference of type Area as well. Use formula AreaDifference =
ProgramArea - Area. Don't bother to reflect SF or other unit selection in
parameter names. Examine formatting tab of schedule properties. For both new
parameters you can make use of Field Format... button. If project-wide Area
units are SF then you may not have to do anything, just type the number in
to schedule. To get more flexibility in input and output formatting uncheck
Use Project Units and select whatever you want. You may even input
ProgramArea in square meters and output AreaDifference in square inches;
Revit will do unit conversion and formatting for you.

Here's what I'm trying to do. It's pretty simple, but I've also found the
help files less than helpful; too much unexplained.
I've got a schedule that lists room areas. I'd like to add two parameters:
one where I can enter the programmed area for each room and another that
calculates the difference between the two. (actual area - programmed area =
difference +/-). I can export it all to a spreadsheet, but I'd like to see
the changes in "real time".
First, what type(s) should my new
parameters be? Area? Number? One will be an entered value (programmed SF)
the other will be a calculated value (current area - programmed area).
What is the "name" in the Calculated Value dialog? Is this a variable to be
used in the formula? If I enter a parameter (such as programSF), it says
it's already in use. Again, what "type" should I use? Finally, what would
the formula be? Everything I've tried to enter so far trying to match the
types (area, or number) & all of the variations
of formula I have tried (e.g. "differenceSF=programSF-Area") results in
"inconsistent units".
Thanks!
