Mass containing imported geometry

We just noticed that the imported cad geometry in a Mass family will not cut in a floor plan view which contains a plan region. Regardless of the location or height of the plan region. Has anyone ran into this before?

Imported CAD models will have some issues, like this one. Try to do all your objects in Revit.

Agreed, when possible and time and skill level permits. However, there are circumstances when we want to show a complicated piece of equipment which may have already been modeled by a manufacturer. Is there a fix to this, besides recreating the model with native Revit elements, that anyone is aware of?

Manufacturers should hire content creators to create their catalogs as Revit families, and put this content in their websites so that users like you don't have this kind of problems.  I know, this comment does not solve your current problem, but I don't think there is a solution for this other than modeling the object in Revit or asking the manufacturer to provide you with a true Revit family.

I agree with Alfredo that the better solution is modeling in Revit and not imported dumb families that use a dwg file.

In spite of all these I have to admit that sometimes when time does not allow , you have to use these 3d dwg....

Even if these objects can not be shown cut in 2d views as Floor Plans or Sections, there is still a method to make a cut..

For this :

  1. in Floor Plane View draw a Section .
  2. Then , make  a 3d View of the inserted 3d dwg ( you can import it directly into the project)
  3. From Properties > Extents > check Section Box
  4. Right click on View Cube > Orient to View > Section - chose the section made in step 1
  5. Rotate the 3d view using the Cube or Orbit...
  6. Then you can adjust the arrows of the Section Box to cut the object as you want
  7. You can use Top View or Side View for a 2d ...
  8. If you want a real 2d of the section ,you can turn it into a Drafting View using Freeze Drawings from Extensions ( subscription only )
