Load Window Family...can't make type error

It seems like others have had this problem, but I haven't seen a resolution that works for my project.  I'm working in Revit Architecture 2014.  When I try to load a window family (any window family in our library and in the Revit Imperial Library), I receive the error message: "Can't make type "Level Head - Upgrade : 1/4"".

I have purged, audited, and created a new Central model. I've checked for broken parameters in the family.  Tried to delete and replace the Level Head family (within the window family).   Tried to copy and paste the window family in a new file.  Removed all constraints.  Most of the windows that are currently in the project model contain the same level head family and were imported with no problem during SD.  I tried modifying one of the families in our model, but was unable to reload the family once I had "saved as..." a new file name.  The other windows from our library that I've tried to use have been successfully flex tested and placed in other projects.   I'm at a bit of a loss here.  I've attached the error message and window family that I'd like to load into our project.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks,

I've seen an issue that can occur with loading families when a project is upgraded.

If you check the journal files do you see lines like the following:

DBG_WARN: Not a secret style

Also, try loading the family into another project (such a new one), and then paste it into the project.

This is a very real and very serious bug. I have one file today that spontaneously began exhibiting this exact behavior after working normally for over a month.

All content from all categories throw an error when loaded, that they "Can't Make Type…". The file is unusable and we're having to copy paste all of the geometry and annotation into new file, where we have had to also re-create all of the views. Thankfully, this is a small project, but if it happens to a larger one… DISASTER!

It doesn't matter what content you try to load, or what computer you use. Recreating the file, Auditing the file, detaching and discarding work sets, all have no effect. It can be linked and bound without "infecting" the host project, so that's one way to go, but still very, very time consuming. The entire team is at a standstill while this goes on. Thousands of dollars flying out the window.

I have opened a ticket with Autodesk and sent them the file. I just hope they realize how costly this is to us AND them, since this kind of thing jeopardizes the credibility of the software and their ability to support it.

Are we all sitting on time bombs?

Anyone find a soultion on this yet?  Besides copy and pasting family from a new 2104 project?

The threads at Revit City and AUGI have more info. They are here:

http://www.revitforum.org/architecture-general-revit-questions/15056-every-family-cant-make-type.htm...

I've made a video of this problem if anyone wants to check that it looks the same as theirs: http://screencast.com/t/OQ2xMvRRF

We have had our second occurance of this file corruption (can't make type), and I want to know where Autodesk stands on this.

Talking outloud to Autodesk in the desperate hope that someone actually reads these things:

A) What is their recommended course of action for users with this error? Do we send the file in to be fixed, and how long will that take? Projects can't typically wait very long, and downtime usually means blown budgets, deadlines and money out the window?

B) If Autodesk can fix it, why can't they issue a hot fix or other utility for us to use to repair the file?

C) Does anyone from Autodesk actually monitor the threads on this site?

Just because Autodesk doesn't admit there's a problem, doesn't mean that there isn't a problem. This is a seriouse BUG being experienced by a great many users (many with many yeras of experience).

Anyone?

Please?

I recently experienced this same error. I found that the local file no longer had a file path for the shared parameters file. Once the location for the shared parameter file had been reloaded, I was able to load families again. Note: The families I was loading contained parameters from a shared parameter file.

The message "Can't Make Type…" can occur for a variety of reasons, and may be an expected message if the family file is improperly configured.

However there is a situation specific to the 2014 software where the following is encountered:
- All (or most) families cannot be loaded into a project.
- The project was upgraded from a prior version to the 2014 version.

- The same families can be successfully loaded into a new project.
- The journal files record the line "DBG_WARN: Not a secret style…" prior to the error.

If the above applies, this indicates that there is corruption in certain (internal) dimension styles within the project.

You should be able to work around the issue by copying and pasting families from another project. However, to clear issue (in the 2014 version) you would need to log a support case and have the project manually repaired.

I have also found that upgrading the project from 2014 to 2015 (with Update Release 3) seems to clear the issue.

Upgrading to 2015 fixed this very incredibly frustrating family issue for me! And also saved me loads of time.

Thank you!!!!!!

Lance,

Can you give us more information or instruction on what the manual fix is so we don't need to open a support ticket for every office that experiences this?

Thanks.

Hi, I don't know if my issue is similar to anyone else's, but in case it is, I found that the issue was on the thickness of the wall in the family in comparisson to the thickness of a wall in the project. The project's wall was 11.7475cm thick (3 5/8 studs with two 1/2" gypsum layers converted to cm). I edited the wall thickness in the family (which in this case, was a urinal) to be just the same and that worked for me. The real issue now is to make it work in ANY wall, which I can't manage to do yet.

Anyways, there's my answer, hope it is useful.

Good day!

AE

Have the issue in a 2015 file.. >.< tried a bit of everything.

I have been running into this issue constantly. Is there no bug fix for Revit 2014?

I don't think so, but you can try changing the decimals of the wall's thickness, round it up a bit, or else, change the family's wall thickness to be the same as your project's walls. I don't know any better solution yet.

Good luck!

Do we have a fix for this yet?

I just started using Revit a couple months ago and I'm having this issue in one of my projects. Seems very sporatic too. In some cases, I can delete the wall, re-draw the exact same wall, then insert the window just fine. Other times, that doesn't work. Loading from other projects doesn't seem to work either. Sometimes if I change the size of the window I'm trying to place it will work fine. Other times, that exact window won't work.

Extremely frustrating!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

Matt.

Editing the thickness of the wall from within the family itself (in this case, a Kolbe window) worked for me. Thanks!
