Level reference lines

Hi All,

In a practice project I deleted all of my elevation views but not the
levels. When I created new elevation views the existing level datum lines
do not show up. When I try to create replacement level lines I cannot label
them the same as existing levels. I understand why I cannot rename them but
is there a way to turn the existing level datum lines back on or can I
create a new level then associate it back to an existing level?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

I have the same problem with some level lines not displaying in some
sections, but are in others.

Level lines (and ref planes and column grid lines) have several features
which control visibility in different views.

The first is the extents of the level. There are two types of extents. When
you select a level line, you'll see a small circle or dot at each end. The
circle means that the 3D extents is being displayed and is marked with blue
3D label. The dot represents 2D extents are being used. You can toggle
between the two and you'll find additional options on the right click menu.
In the case you posted, I'd venture to say that the 3D extents didn't cross
the picture plane of the view you created. Either remove the crop region, or
expand the crop region and you'll probably find the level off in space. You
can then drag it and rest the 3D extents. The 3D extents is useful when you
have several wings of a building with different levels. As long as your
view doesn't intersect the level - it won't display.

Another feature is the scope box. this can be used to control the extents of
many different levels and grids all at once.

You can also select the annotation and right click/hide annotation in view.
Later you can float your mouse over them, right click again and unhide them.
This is view specific and I try to use it sparingly.

Levels can also be affected by worksets and phases.

PS: The black background will be more trouble than it is worth.

The problem is likely that since Level Lines are not infinite, your
elevations/sections do not pick them up. If you can see them in one view,
but not others, you can select the level and hit "propogate extents", that
should expand the level through the model. If you can't find them at all,
create an elevation view way off in the distance (you might have to do it in
two directions), with the extents much larger than the model itself, and no
far clip. You might be able to see the levels way off to the side of the
model, and can drag them back over (make sure you drag the 3d ends, not 2d)
or propogate extents.

Thank you both for your replies, that was the problem they where out in the
middle of nowhere like a couple of lost sheep.

Aaron, out of curiosity what types of issues have you seen with the black
background? can it be changed to something other than B/W?

Thanks again,
Tom

Black works well in AutoCAD where you have a lot of light color lines for
layers. Of course Revit doesn't have layers and was designed around WISIWYG
for printing. I don't even think it was until R6 that the linework could be
toggled to thin lines - so it always showed you the final print.

If you try to simulate colors like in AutoCAD, you end up with a lot more to
manage for printing. You'll have to remember to always print black and
you'll lose the ability to put in halftone lines. If you don't force
everything to black, your AutoCAD like colors will print in shades of gray.
The underlay feature is hard coded as a halftone gray, just as if you
overlayed one pencil drawing done on Clearprint 1000H over another. so that
would also end up forced to black.

Some of the Revit features are hard coded and you can't change the color.
The temporary dimensions used to be only blue which looked fine on white but
not on black. This has changed in recent versions to work a little better.
However labels, levels and section heads (links) are still a medium blue,
which is hard to see. If you turn on shadows - with a black background. The
shadow feature is one I couldn't live without. There are other little
annoying things along these lines.

The black background was put in early versions of Revit when they were
competing with AutoCAD. In AutoCAD it makes sense. AutoCAD used layers that
started out on primitive monitors which could only display 8 colors. Even
today, light color layers are easier to distinguish one from another than
dark colors on a white background. However, what other program uses a black
workspace? Word and Excel sure don't. SketchUp is white. Even many of
Autodesks own programs use other default backgrounds. Viz/Max default to
grey. Inventor is a sky blue. Maya is white.

Revit only supports black and white backgrounds. It would be nice if they
offered more options like Inventor and even the option to use one color in
sheets, another in a view and another in perspective and another in
Isometrics. I imagine it will be a while before we see anything like that.

The things I don't miss about AutoCAD are all those layers and confusing
printing by color.
