Importing From Other Softwares?

Hi All,

I understand that most dealing with Revit are architects and civil people. Anybody here who knows that if it is possible to import a SolidWorks part or assembly into revit, to create a family from it? or just use it as an imported object?

Thanks

i never used solidworks- but doesn't solidworks
save its 3d models as sat? i think it does..
and it probably saves its 2d drawings as dwg..

even so- imagine the mess you would have
trying to bring all that solidworks data into revit-
unless you cleaned it up first- then it might not
be too unhappy in revit- but still- i see no reason
to even want to bring a solidworks model into revit..

if you want to build a building in revit that was
modeled in solidworks- just view it in solidworks
or the free solidworks viewer and build it in revit
from looking at it- nice and clean..

C o l l a b o r a t i o n.......some designers need to collaborate with others who may be designing in solidworks, rhino, digital projects, generative componenets, other Autodesk products even and many need a way of importing this data into REVIT

I have been partially successful with converting parts and assemblies to ACIS (.SAT) and then loading them into REVIT. problem im having now is that by doing so:

1. Objects loose their associated orientation, this means that the right side of my part/assy becomes the top when i,ported into revit and almost impossible ( or atleast i dont know how ) to change orientation of them in Revit!

2. Im loosing all the visuals such as colors and appearances.

Other than these two, it works fine. Anybody have any suggestions/ solution?

Thanks

paul-

could you tell us the purpose for bringing
solidworks objects into revit? there are a lot
of things i don't know about what can be done
with what you are talking about.. what kinds
of things can be made in solidworks that can
be used in a revit project? sounds very interesting..

Verctor,

Solidworks is mostly used for manufacturing and design. Almost every product out there these days is designed in either solidworks, Inventor, or other similar CAD software. It might take days or weeks to design some product to specs in SW. ( for example if i you wanted to model a lighting fixture with very complex geometry). As a mechanical designer, if i spent 4 days to model such item, i don't want to spend another 4 days or so so model the same thing in Revit! Autodesk claims full versatility and compatibility, but the reality is different.

Very true, Autodesk can not even get efficient compatability between their own products let alone others.
You would have hoped that in an ever more collaborating world that Autodesk would have put more enthasis and resources into this, especially between their own products.

that you are not compatible.. that you are
not fully versatile anymore.. you know
what i mean bern?
