How to Reference Views from linked files

I have thought about this and want to get input on a best approach to utilizing Views created in a linked Revit project file. One need is to create a Callout within the current Revit project and reference a view from another linked project. This is a common need in many of our projects and any input would be appreciated.

Revit is not very good at referencing information from other files, even ones that are linked. I don't believe that this is possible. For a similar purpose, we have create a Detail Item that mimics the appearance of the Callout, has adjustable length/width, and includes a fake tag. We even made the label a Shared Parameter so we can create a Schedule to keep track (if we have a lot of them) and easily locate them to verify that they have a correct reference.

There is an open wishlist item for the ability to access views from a linked Revit project.

If you would like to submit feedback directly to our development group on how this feature would affect your workflow, you can use the following link: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=1109794

Update: See this post for more current info on this topic.

Yep, we do it that way too. I was fishing for new ideas or tricks because I hate dumb connections.

Hello,

I am not being able to create a Shared Parameter in the Detail Item family.

How did you do you?

Thank you

I don't see Revit in that list...

i just sent a message related to this topic and the need for cross referencing between linked BIM360 models.  I am a landscape architect working at a multi disciplinary firm.  We are in separate linked models (ARCH and LA) and are needing to link to each other's views, at complicated on-structure conditions. I would be interested in providing more feedback or helping to problem solve this with you moving forward, as this would be a important feature for us to eventually be able to incorporate into our Revit standards.

I was just reassuring my architect that a tag must report the correct value, then within a half hour am reminded of this huge hole in the "system" and the wholly inadequate workaround suggested here in 2012. (Of course the link provided by autodesk employee Lance to offer feedback is no longer valid, because the discussion is so old and the same question is probably asked a hundred different ways in the discussion boards, so who can keep track of all the feedback links.)

Model views or drafting views. And post your own topic since this one is so old and marked as solved.

We are using this workaround too.

@Lance.Coffey, this has been on the wishlist for 11yrs and no movement?  Even the text editor got update after 10yrs.  Is this still on Autodesk's radar or just part of the plan.  Wait long enough and folks will just make some convoluted workaround that isn't really that good of an idea.  When you work on Million SF buildings/campuses, you can't put everything in one model by trade.  This is a problem that is long over due and should be addressed.

Thank you for checking in on this @dtpeter2901.

Since my last post (in 2012), we have moved to a different system for product feedback: Revit Ideas board

I found the following related idea posted here: Allow By-Linked-Views to display view references

To raise attention for this idea, please vote it up!

To see upcoming new features (including ones that have been accepted from the ideas board), see the Autodesk AEC Public Roadmaps.

@twilks1  there is a workaround : simply add a View reference (which is an annotation) and link by view in your other file.
