Horsepower...

I am finally going to Revit. I have a dual core AMD Opteron with 8 gigs of ram, an nVidia FX 4500 video card with dual HP LP2065 monitors all running on XP Pro. Will Revit take advantage of any of this hardware?

Does that mean that R10 is likely to perform faster than R9 on the same
machine ?

Or it will be able to make use of more resource, if you have it, that R9
couldn't touch.

Revit 10 will be a 64 bit application. If you are running XP64 or Vista 64
you have access to 32Gb of ram per processor. Currently Revit has access to
1.5Gb. So if you have a DualCore running XP64 and Revit 10 you can have 42Gb
of ram, providing Revit 10 can multithread. If Revit 10 can only use a
single processor then you it'll have access to the 32Gb

Don't bother, 8GB or RAM will definitely show improvements.

The Revit and just about every other application will scream on the hardware you describe. Unfortunately Revit release 9.X will take advantage of every feature except the full 8 GB of RAM. That is not to say your system will not use the RAM for multi-tasking applications.

When VISTA or XP64 OS is released sometime this coming Spring you should see significant performance gains out of your systems RAM and Revit 10 or 10.X should be capable of using every ounce of RAM you have up to 32 GB.

I also bought a screaming system a few months back, specifically the DELL XPS 700 with Dual Core 2 6800 processor, 4 GB RAM, Dual Channel DVI w/512 MB of RAM on each channel and a 30" flat panel monitor in dual mode with a 24" flat panel monitor and a THX 5-speaker surrond sound system. Not only does it scream, but it is visually awesome and blasting radical.

Great to see some of us Revit users are kicking up the speed, expanding our visual panoramas and tuning up the sound.

Rock On Reviteers!

By the way, who is going to AU this year, can we link up at the Revit Mixer Monday night or at one of the lunch sessions. Send me email off-line and I will try to coordinate a meeting. Sound off and we will make it a date. I am arriving Sunday mid-day and staying through Friday mid-day (end of sessions). After AU i will be on the road for the next three weeks.

Well as Mel put it, it wont take advantage of all of your ram. Revit 9.X is currently capped at 3gb. Hopefully that will change in Revit 10, where they hope to have it compatible with a 64bit OS

Faster processor always help.

The one thing in your spec. that really doesn't make a difference for Revit is the graphics card. Sadly, all Revit cares is that it supports OpenGL, therefore Revit performs just as well on a 64MB card as it does on a 512MB card.

I've asked Autodesk to issue a white paper on what graphic cards work best for the application, and in the future integrate Revit better with high end graphics card. Evidently they are working it.

I'm still not clear on the single vs dual core processor debate....we're
looking at getting a couple of new machines; to what extent does Revit take
advantage of this technology? To what extent will R10 take advantage of it?
