Exporting to File Navisworks Freedom can open

The Revit 2011 Navisworks Exporter plugin works fine for exporting files for Navisworks Manage (.nwc).  The problem is that those files can't be opened in Navisworks freedom until they are converted to a .nwd file.  Can the .nwd be generated directly from the plugin?  Both NWD and NWC are shown in the Navisworks Options Editor for the plugin, but only a .nwc is generated.

Any suggestions?

Jon, unfortunately the answer is no.  Nwc is a "Cache" file for Navisworks, which is used to help track changes to subsequent iterations of the file from Revit.  NWD is the "Published" file from NW Manage, which is all the files for that project "World"...i.e.other formats or files, are combined and bound into one file, read by Freedom.  Somewhat like 'binding' xrefs in Acad.

Hi jonmcfarlandWS,

Mike is correct as Navisworks Freedom can only open NWD and DWF files.

Rather than open each NWC individually and save to an NWD, if you’d like an automated way to convert your NWC files to NWD files to be opened in Freedom, you can use the Batch Utility (Home > Tools > Batch Utility) in Navisworks. It allows you to convert supported file formats, such as NWC files, to NWD files either as one combined NWD or as multiple NWDs files.

You can find information on it in the help topics in Navisworks under Contents > Get a Whole-Project View > Work with Files > Manage Files > Batch Utility.

If you’d like to wish to send an enhancement request with regard Freedom supporting NWC files, you can use the Customer Feedback page here:

I have Revit on my system, but the engineers and Project Managers that I work with don't and their systems aren't good enough to run it.  I thought the solution would be to put the files out so that they could open them in Freedom, but it seems like I need to own Navisworks Manage to create the .nwd files - this is a large expense just to make readable files.  It seems odd that the exporter can't put out a file that the viewer can use or that the viewer can't open files that main program uses.

Jon, you and they could export out of Revit to 3D Dwf files, then they could view with Design Review w/o needing Freedom.

So they just pulled this functionality out of plant3d/freedom to try and pawn more copies of manage?

Thanks again autodesk.
