Energy Analyses?

In the March issue of Architectural Products: Green Issue, on page 30, there
is a short article about how BNIM architects used Revit to perform
daylighting studies and energy analyses. How do you do this?

Thanks,
Clint

Using Revit MEP and IES was probably the solution. They could have used
Green Building Studio for energy analysis. www.greenbuildingstudio.com

Revit can not perform a LEED compliant daylighting analysis, period. You can export Revit model to VIZ or Max and by using radiosity get the FC readout for the LEED template letter or you can manually create daylighting factors as a parameter within a window family and associate windows with a room, but most likely you will end up exporting data via ODBC and using Excel to get the values needed for the submittal. Vector shadows have no information whatsoever that is useful in determining ones design compliance with daylighting requirements.
Get yourself a copy of Ecotect and see how versatile and good that software is, especially when it comes to linking data to Energy + and Radiance.

Good Luck!

or you can use Revit and IES as I talked about (IES can now open a Revit
file without an import/export process) and run your daylighting analysis.

Let's see

Revit Building $5000
Revit MEP $5000
IES VE $4500

Total $14500

Ecotect $700
Energy + $0
Radiance $0
Therm 5.2 $0

Total & $700

My point is that it is high time to really include sustainable analysis as the part of the basic BIM compliant software, and stop charging for incremental features. All of ADSK’s applications the are BIM compliant, being Revit Building, Revit MEP, ADT and ABS are fully capable of performing this kind of analysis as the underlying engine can support that easily. But I guess if Factory says otherwise we have no choice but to believe. That kind of manipulation is so contradictory to the multidisciplinary and socially responsible character that sustainable architecture should have. Well I guess, this is just big business as usual.

You will get some IES VE functionality INCLUDED with Revit MEP. Yes, still
would be nice to run this from Revit Arch, but we'll have to wait and see
how that pans out.

Two links for you

and
http://windows.lbl.gov/

non biased and entirely scientific approach to energy consumption related issues. On these sites the marketing is not an imperative.
