Edit Family button

I recieved a Revit file from some one in which, when I select the doors the
Edit family button doesnt appear in the Options bar. However, when I create
a wall and add a door to it, Edit Family button appears when the newly
created door is selected. What controls the availability of Edit Family
button?

Thanks

The family must be an 8.0 family before inserting. Upgraded families do not
have this option. Manually upgrade the family and reload first.

How do you manually upgrade a family? I'm assuming this is different from
just opening/saving with 8.0.

You can batch upgrade families using a tool found here:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?id=3807894&linkID=3770375&siteID=123112

You will find instructions and the files you need at this link.

Jeff,

thanks, but that is just for batch upgrading. It does not change the status
of the "edit" nested family button.

I am continually baffled when people feel the need to comment on 18 year old threads...

Do you have this problem? If you do, I feel fairly confident in saying that whatever the solution was nearly 2 decades ago would not be the same solution today...

As newer versions of Revit are based on the previous ones, there is a chance that an old solution would still work. However, I did miss just how old this post was. I will continue looking and hope to find more useful responses in the future.

If you're having an issue and can't find a relevant post to help you, just start a new one.
