Door and Window Types

I would like to create a door family that has the width and height as instance parameters instead of type parameters. The template has it defaulted to type. Is it possible to do this. Our standard practice is to have a type such as hollow metal door that can have multiple sizes. The schedule would report the sizes. I would hate to have to have a type for each size of a door with the same basic properties.

You would need to go into the family file for that type of door and redo the width and height parameters to be of dimension type by instance, not by type, and then get rid of all the types. Before you do that, I advise you to save a copy of the original.

Yep, that was my first way of thinking as well. I soon came around to leaving
them as Types.

We leave the height and width as type parameters, but in the door elevations we lable the dimension to refer to the door schedule. This means that we have multiple doors with the same Type Mark, but not the end of the world.

Our old practice (using ACA) was to have one type, say interior hollow core. In the door type drawing, we would have that type labeled as A. The door type drawing would also show a louver dashed with a note "louver where occurs". In the commnets, there would be a comment that says "louver". Should I create separate types or failies for these now. Or have one family with those items modeled in them as well.

A door schedule is typically setup to look for families then by type. If you change them to instance parameters you'll have a mess, quantity takeoffs will be inaccurate as well. Thought about the same thing when I first setup our templates and quickly found out that it was a bad idea.

really? I care only about the door schedule - does this mean we need say 5
kinds of doors (glazed, slab etc) x 6-7 sizes x 3 formats (single, double,
double unequal sides) or 90 door types?

shared instance would limit that quite nicely and work in the door schedule.
