Demo Phasing not showing demo lines

I am using Revit Architecture 2011... I beleive I set it up correctly.. I have an existing, demo and new construction  (phase) in that order from past to future... but for some reason when I have my phase filter set to Show Existing + demo, my demo lines or components wont show in demolition lines, they are still solid lines.

The properties of the items show; phase created = existing and phase demolished = new construction

any help would be very appericated

Revit does not really need a demolition phased defined in order to show demolished items.  I suspect your inclusion of the demilished phase in your phasing dialog is what is really causing the issue.  You only need to have an exisiting phase and a new construction phase.  Think of demolition as somethign that happens at the very biginning of "New Construction" rather than being a phase in and of itself.

I wrote an article with an example file published at the Revit wiki help on the topic of phasing in Revit which addresses this issue.  Thke a look at that article and the example project to see if it make the process more clear and resolves the issue you are seeing.

Thank u, that clearification helped, but what i also found was that in a scale on 1:30 or above 1/16 demo lines dont show.. It just reads as a solid line any way to fix that.

By creating a "demo phase", you created another "period of time." so the phase filters are being set for that period of time.  I'll try to make sense of this by renaming your Existing, demo, and new phases to A, B, and C. (So that the filter names don't cause more confusion. the filter names are NOT the same as the phase names)

Existing = A

Demo = B

New  = C

You can have items that are existing, demo'd, temporary, and new, during any Phase (period of time).  During A, you can have items that are existing from a period of time prior to A.  You can also "demo" objects during A.  You can also place new items during A.  And of course, you can have items that are temporary during A. (Temporary means they are both placed and removed during the same Phase)

Now you can have the same for Phase B, and the same for Phase C. (see why i changed the names?  can get confusing to say "there are new items in Demo, and demo items in New")

To figure this all out, I need a little more info from you.  Since Phases and Phase Filters are view specific, i need to know what the "Phase properties" are of  the view you are having issues with.  You uses a phase filter "Show Existing and demo".  If you have a view set to "C" (New) as a phase, and apply this filter, you wont see any "demo'd" items, because they don't exist it this period of time. They were "demo'd" during a previous time period and no longer exist.  You will only see those items that "exist" from Phase A and B.

I find that most people feel a need to add a "demo" phase, but this is what leads to confusion.  Here's how I look at it.  You have an existing building...a period of time called "construction" starts, and during construction, the first step is to demolish some stuff.  then during construction, some new stuff is added.

Only two named Phases are needed: Existing and New.  Draw everything that is in the existing building and set the objects phase properties to existing. Make views for those objects that have properties set to Existing phase.  Then create some views that have view properties set to Phase New.  In those views, do some demolition and build some new stuff.  Where needed, duplicate the view, and set one Phase Filter to Show Exisitng and Demo (for demo plans) and in the duplicate view, set the Phase Filter to Show Existing and New (for the New Costrcution plans).

Hope all this makes sense, as it's much easier to show that to try and explain via text!

Let me know if you have questions.

The line styles are "printed" sizes so at a 1:30 scale the 1/16th" lines are going to end up solid.  You would need to pick a different line style with a smaller dash in order for it to appear dashed.

thank you.

another question about phasing and veiws. Now I succussfully have a Demo and New floor plan of my level one. how if I want to havethe same enlarged plans  (restroom areas) that have callouts for the exact same spot in a demo and new plan. How would I go about doing that correctly?

You can create the callout in one of the views, and then select it and copy the callout to the clipboard. Modify>Clipboard>Copy.  Then go to the other view where you need the same callout and Paste from clipboard using "Aligned to Current View" option.  Modify>Clipboard>Paste>Aligned to Current View.  This will give you an exact duplicate of the callout in the current view.

Yeah. The naming is weird. It does not follow the convention you expect. I think it is caused by the cut and paste action. Not totally sure. I should look to see if this is something logged with development.
