Default elevation when inserting families

What determines the default elevation when inserting familes? I have a wall hosted family that always defaults to 4'-0". I have tried setting the default elevation in the family but it always defaults back to 4'. I have this issue with other familes as well.

I know I can set the elevation when I insert it but having to so that every time seems pointless when the elevation will never change for a family.

In a wall hosted family it should default to whatever the elevation of the object is in relation to the Level in the family, but it could change if you've added or changed reference plane origins. Do you have one of these families you could attach so we can take a closer look?

I misspoke in my original post. This family is a faced based family so there is no floor level reference and no option to set the default height within the family.

I figured there must be a default setting somewhere in the revit settings it is getting the default height from. I would like to set that to 0 if possible.

Family attached.

Thanks for the clarification. This is a hard coded parameter that is populated based on the last entry that was used. In your family, it will place the element based on the Elevation instance parameter. You should notice the following behavior:

  1. Load the family into the project.
  2. Click the Component tool to place an instance.
  3. BEFORE placing the instance, set the Elevation to 5'.
  4. Place the component and deactivate the tool.
  5. Go back into the Component tool and try to place another instance. You'll see that the Elevation parameter is now already set to 5'.

It's only going to remember the value if you enter it BEFORE you actually place it. So for this family, if you activate the component tool to place an instance, and then set Elevation to 0' before you place it, it should remember that going forward.

Let us know if this helps!

Thanks,

I set it to 0 and I dont typically ever have to change that so hopefully I wont have to fiddle with it again.

Is the default elevation a system thing or a project thing?

It should be only project-specific.

I know this is an old thread, but this parameter really needs to be built into the component, if there is a default coming from the component that overrides the "whatever was used last" in the project environment.

Also, when placing a component using the "solution" posted on this thread works, however when using Create Similar, the offset does not follow that rule and places to a seemingly random elevation each time.

I understand this is an really old thread but when using the from what point dose the default elevation work from in the family?  Is this from the Centerline Front / Back or from the center of the geometry of the family?  I am trying to make panels that come in so the top of the panel is always set to be 6'-0" unless the panel is taller than 6'-0".  It seems that some families are coming in with the Centerline Front / Back as the mid point and some from the center of the geometry.
