copy/monitor doesn't seem to copy

I am working with a linked model; I've been told to copy all the walls and floors (in addition to levels and grids) into my local file to maximize screen performance, as it is painfully slow when information has to go back and forth to the central file on the server whenever I pan, change views, etc. I went to tools/copy-monitor, set my options, chose copy, made a rectangle around everything in the link (lower right to upper left), and nothing seemed to happen, but I clicked okay after waiting a bit. Then I tried to unload the link as I was instructed by the client's BIM specialist, and all the model geometry was gone. Any ideas on what is going wrong here?

I believe you cannot do multiple categories of objects in one pass of the Copy/Monitor command. I believe you have to copy/monitor all grids in one command, then all floors, then walls, etc. Are you an MEP or a structural house?

We have MEP (we are a lighting design firm). After I posted yesterday, I found out that there are 2 places where you have to press "finish", and I had missed the one on the options bar at the top. So now I've managed to copy some elements, but not the whole thing. If you can only copy one category at a time, I wonder why, when you click the filter icon, you can check off multiple categories? This whole process is not very clearly documented. Thanks for your reply.
