Ok, so I've found some posts, but no solution. Does that mean that there is still no way of rotating the contour labels so that they are not upside down and no way of removing the white background? Really?

Did you ever get an answer on this one?
I remember at one stage I did get one...but have forgotten how...and now don't recall which project I fixed this in.
Any suggestions most appreciated?
The location of the line that we draw to indicate a series of labels determines the orientation of the contour lables. Look at these two sites, in plan view and section. It's not the slope what determines the position of the labels, but the other way way around. In both cases, site going up or down, it is possible to get the labels to be readable.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Sadly I have tried this and it doesn't work.
North is up the page, and from what I have read, the system label editor should have a place for me to change the label to be readable or something like this. Keep readable maybe?
The difficulty is trying to get into the heart of the system variables. As the program has changed, the location of some variable moves between tabs.
I'm waiting for support from my software provider locally.
When I find the way, I will post the answer.
Thanks anyway.
There is not a way to change the orientation of the contour label in Revit. It is always placed parallel to the contour at the point where the labeling line intersects the contour. The label is also always placed in a way that it would be "readable" if you were walking uphill along the labeling line. It does not matter the direction the line is drawn. "Up hill" is the "readable" direction for the label.
I believe this is the standard from the USGS.
There are no controls in Revit to alter the placement, positioning, orientation of contour labels.

Thanks for the message.
I recall now this issue from some time back and have managed to overcome
with the tedious option of adding spot levels along the contours.
Needless to say, Autodesk need to address this.
It is poor to think it has not been fixed after all this time.
This is a frustrating and unprofessional look. There is no logical reason
why these labels should only read one way going up hill...
Surely given the power of what has been achieved, this is not a difficult
task.
Come on Autodesk...rise to the challenge!!
I may be a small player, but I will speak out.
Kind regards,

Like I mentioned in my post, the way the labels are applied to contours in Revit does follow USGS standard so there is a reason why it behaves as it does.
But if this is an important issue to you, you can post it as a suggestion to the Revit Idea Station for consideration during future development. If it gathers enough support the team may consider a change to the current behavior.
How many votes does it need to get recognised?
It currently has two 'Ideas' open with approx. 20 votes each.
C'mon Revit!
