BSOD on running revit!!

I downloaded Autodesk Revit to trial on my PC and it simply crashes it!!! I get a BSOD on opening the program, what can I do to see what is causing this? I'm using a laptop computer, an asus m3n, on winXP home edition. Also, Revit 5.0 ran just fine here!

However I've never heard of it bluescreening anything. Typically bluescreens are because of driver conflicts, not software packages, and as such I'd try updating your video drivers to the latest available, updating DirectX too, and then try running Revit again. I've heard 6 makes more use of Open GL than 5, and if your laptop has a hard time with Open GL, that might be the cause of your bluescreens. -- Jeffrey McGrew Application Specialist BSD AEC Technologies, a division of ID8 Media Inc. thanks for your reply. do you know how can I track the error down? I have in the meantime formatted my pc, has the revit crashes messed up some system files, and after new resinstallation, it kept on crashing. However, I can be a liitle more specific, as I could run revit the first run, but when trying to do something with it it immeadtly bluescreened. Now it bluescreens right after the Revit splash window appears. I sent the error report to MS, and it returned a probable cause, related to my Synaptics touchpad, recommending driver update. I have done so, without luck. help? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey McGrew" Newsgroups: autodesk.revit Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2004 4:46 PM Subject: Re: BSOD on running revit!! > A.Seven wrote: > > I downloaded Autodesk Revit to trial on my PC and it simply crashes it!!! > > > > I get a BSOD on opening the program, what can I do to see what is causing > > this? Sounds like MS thinks it's a driver issue with your touchpad. Have you tried removing said touchpad driver completely from the system, and using something else for input just as a test? -- Jeffrey McGrew Application Specialist BSD AEC Technologies, a division of ID8 Media Inc. It is not possible to do that, windows needs to reboot to uninstall drivers, and when booting it installs drivers automatically, works right away. also, it is not possible to disable it, like with most hardware components, as there is not such an option. I have related the problem to asus, but I have not received any notice from their part. yet. I'm no expert on this point, but could it be a corrupted or moved licence file, following your re-formatting? I heard of something similar on another piece of software. I'm sure somebody else here can either eliminate this suggestion or offer further advice. you will have to remove the hardware from the system before rebooting to keep it from re-installing the drivers. I don't think it's the license file, for if Revit can't get the proper license it simply defaults to demo mode rather than choking completely. Also, with Windows XP, 90% of the time it's a driver issue when you get a bluescreen. Is there any way in your driver settings with the built-in touchpad in your laptop to ignore Revit? I know that some people have issues with Logitech mice and Revit (nothing as severe as a bluescreen- just annoying behavior) and that they have to 'exclude' Revit from logitech's mouse driver 'features'. Maybe your touchpad has got some special 'feature' that was so poorly written that it's triggering the bluescreen. I'd talk with your laptop maker and complain loudly about this, for if it is the touchpad driver causing the issue then that's totally a product of bad drivers on their part. -- Jeffrey McGrew Application Specialist BSD AEC Technologies, a division of ID8 Media Inc. no this can't be. I have installed revit two times (with a computer format in the meantime), and the problem has been the same. this is an hardware compatability issue... for sure "Damo - BDP" wrote in message news:40a9444b_1@newsprd01... > I'm no expert on this point, but could it be a corrupted or moved licence > file, following your re-formatting? After removal of the drivers, the touchpad keeps running. Probably a stupid question - and I don't have all of this thread in my
cache, but have you tried it in safe mode to see what happens?

So once the touchpad is installed, it can never be removed from the system? I would think you would uninstall the drivers, disconnect the touchpad, and reboot. Strange if this is not the case? Yeah, good idea! Safe mode shouldn't load the touch pad drivers....

No I hadn't 🙂

I did think about that, but then I started writing to the manufacturer, and
forgot.

And what would you know, it does run in Safe mode... and the strangest
thing is that the touchpad runs as well in safe mode... the licensing
manager does not however (just demo/viewer mode).

I'm starting to think that it is not the touchpad that is crashing Revit...

The OCA MS site suggested it probably because they did not identify any
other problem, and pointed to that one of the touchpad...

I cannot go around and bluescreen my pc many times, because most of the
times I get corrupted files (had to format the laptop 1 time, and I don't
have the time for more...).

I get the same thing when I tried to install the demo on both my desktop and my laptop. Both computers give me a BSOD after the license manage closes when I select demo. I have tried it in safe mode and everything works with the desktop. Yes, most win32k.sys BSOD crashes are due to video card driver problems, but I have tried all 3 nVidia drivers for the Quadro FX3000 that are Autodesk certified. Yes, I have tried it with a clean, fresh install. I did however do a quick format which I am told could cause the BSOD. I was don't wanting to go thru it all over again just to try a demo software at this time.

It obviously is not a win xp pro/home issue. This should not matter,
just driver/hardware problems. I've used a few different mice (all logitech) with Revit. No problems at all.
Assuming it is a gfx card, that's hard to be removed/exchanged in a laptop, try some older versions of generic nvdia drivers.
Hope this helps.

I finally solved it!!! I was having all the same issues described here! In my case, it was Stardock's Windows Blinds, a GUI tweaker. I you have a software that does something similar, try unloading it or unistalling it, let me know... and Good luck!!!
