Best place to add content to libraries

I am just learning Revit and browsing Revit City, etc there are some really
useful families for use in our designs.

Where is the best place to save these additional items, such that they
aren't lost when new versions are installed.

For example, I have noticed that there is a Revit Building Metric 9.0
library folder and then a 9.1 library folder also....

Regards

We make a separate folder called Custom Library and save anything in it that
we've made, modified or downloaded. Then we leave the Library that Revit
installs alone, in fact I make it read only so that it forces you to save it
elsewhere if you make a change.

Thanks for the advice, makes good sense.

When starting afresh, its nice to know that the way you are setting up your
system for change, is the most appropriate.

All the best for the new year.

Tiss,

Revit installs its program files in the Program File folder and user content such as families, templates, etc. under Documents and Settings. When it istalls the user content files it saves them in a unique folder with the Revit release name and number so it never overwrites your prior installed contect files.

That being said, I have traditionally saved any additional content downloaded from the Internet or created locally to the appropriate folder under the default pathed Revit Family folder. That way my users and me do not have to search through tons of special folders or multiple deep folders. I do recommend backing up your content folders to a server or back up hard drive just in case any computer hardware goes south and takes your hard drive with it or users delete files accidently of course.

So I always know where doors or windows are being stored and can simply go there without having to navigate through a myraid of special folders on special drives or mapped drives.
