Beginner Questions

1. How does one handle alternates in Revit 2008?

2. If I change the line weight settings in my version of Revit, is it applied to the drawing or to all future projects I start?

3. Same for hatch patterns. If I create a custom pattern, is it applied to the drawing? Or do I need to create a network standards and share the pattern out, simular to AutoCAD?

1. Look at design options. The toolbar is turned off by default - so you'll
have to turn it on.

2. No. Lineweights are project based. Set the lineweights in your template
if you want to change all future projects. You can use Transfer Project
Standards to move the settings from one project to another or to your
template.

3. Again the hatch patterns are project based. Set them in your template.

Does everything have to be drawn in black? With AutoCAD you could create CTB files, which doesn't appear to be an option in Revit. So if I change my walls to appear purple or something, they are going to print purple, correct? Same for door, windows, etc..?

I see an option for black lines, grayscale & color. If you use black lines, what happens if you attach color to a wall?

Anyone have any pointers, for getting started?

what output are you expecting?
black? - use default black lines
color? - change to color lines and be sure to always print color to a color
printer.

"I see an option for black lines, grayscale & color. If you use black
lines, what happens if you attach color to a wall"
if the lines are color on the screen and the 'black lines' print option is
used the lines will print black (halftones will not print correctly either)

Output: Mainly Construction Documents
Currently I use colors for line weights. (AutoCAD CTB)
Green = medium
Blue = medium to thick
Purple = thick
Yellow = RGB 128,128,128 (gray color used for light lines)
etc.

It would be nice to continue with this same pattern.

I'm just curious how everyone else is doing it. Do you draw everything white or black? Or is everything drawn in color? with a black lines setting? If so does black line exclude hatch patterns? What if I want a (yellow line - grayscale), won't black lines convert it to black instead of grayscale?

This is very confusing to explain. Hope this helps though.

we use CTB for CAD/ACA as well.
with Revit we use black lines and always print grayscale so halftones work.
it took a little while to adjust but now it is preferred.
lineweights in revit are independent of color. kinda like STB in CAD.
