BEAMS

How can I create beams such as 2x s in visible form in plan and elevation
views?
Structural beams only show up in 3D view and only as single lines in plan
view.

A couple things you might want to check. Do you have structural set in view
properties as the discipline? Also having it in wireframe as opposed to
hidden line will cause that to happen.

Change the plan views' detail level to medium or fine.
