automatic locks

is there a way to have Revit insert objects a set distance from others and to lock that distance automatically?

I know you can place a door and lock the dimension to the wall and then erase the dimension to keep it associative but I'd like to see if we could streamline this... I'd like to make a rule that doors in GWB walls are placed with the jamb either 4" off the adjacent wall or in the center of the wall unless it needs be relocated. If it would come in with that 4" dimension already locked that would be really great.

Not automatic but you can make it a little easier. If you add a reference plane on either side of a door for example, make them a strong reference and add dimensions with labels you can preset a typical offset from adjacent walls. Then when you place the door you can use the align tool to accurately position the door based on your "rules". If you make the value a TYPE parameter all door will behave this way. If you make the value an INSTANCE then you'll have to set this value for each door...

wait, so where would the strong reference plane be within the door family,
and once loaded into the project, what are you aligning to what? Now I'm
curious about this.

Yes - align to the wall and lock. It will move with the adjacent wall. There
are some examples posted over @ www.augi.com. Some of us even put in ADA
clearances so you can "see" if anything intersects.

I'm having trouble finding those threads... could you show me the way? Thanks.
