After advice for collaboration on project

We're working on a joint venture with another architecural practice, it's very early stages, but shortly we are going to start in Revit.

Both practices have experience of solo Revit, and I have worked with linked files before (architectural <> structural <> site) with shared coords etc.

I am putting the bones of a Bim Execution Plan together. Whilst some of the areas are pretty straight forward, we are trying to establish the best way of sharing and controlling the files, and how best to break the model down so that both practices can work on it.

Looking ahead, I am not sure quite how to set the file sharing up. Initially I had thought we could use Autodesk 360 to store the files, with separate folders for each of the key stages (in PAS1192 speak, to use it as the Common Data Environment). Each practice, the structural and MEP engineers would 'issue' their controlled latest versions to 360. Each practice would also work on their own shared model (stored on their server) with shared working within the office for 2-5 people to work on.

Looking ahead I can see a few problems:

Both architecural practice will be working on the design, and there is no clear definition or demarcation between our roles that would suggest a clear split in the model (ie external fabric, internal spaces). It is probably something that will develop, but for the moment, I don't know how to arrange the model to allow 2 different companies to work on it. To some extent that is symptomatic of a wider problem: how the 2 companies will split liability with no clear boundary between our responsibilities.

Linking and sharing files across other disciplines is a bit easier, I can see the methodology of using shared files via linking, copy-monitor, reviews etc. that allow manual switching of linked files to control updates.

But has anyone got any advice for how to setup collaboration within a single discipline, across 2 different companies, and via Autodesk 360 ?

Many thanks

Martin

Autodesk 360 does not act as a cloud to synchronize your local file to central for now or not yet.

Working over WAN Example using Revit Server via VPN could be tricky too, because once the project gets bigger it will be hard to work with it.

The best way for now to reduce network latency issue  is to visualize and centralize your data in the same place  and give the visiter of the other company a limited rights to be able to open a specific forler and files.

This will bring me to a conclusion to use one of these options

Citrix XenApp

Or

Setup computers on the same (LAN) network then ask other users from the other company to connect to these computers by remote desktop. I saw some applications that could optimize these kind connection when comes to remotely connect to a computer.

HP RGS have a sender and receiver apps that optimize the 3d virtualization when you are in remote.

I hope this could help you

You could always send to the Autodesk development team, a wishlist for a Revit server but acts for a WAN network. It is worth the try because we could see where technology is heading to. Click HERE for the link.

Sorry for taking so long to respond - we've been dealing with deadline after deadline, and I've just had so little time to get back to our BIM strategy.

Thank you for your answer - I hadn't realised that you couldn't sync to 360.

It seems that we have 2 real options in approaching this project:

Option 1 - Linked files, with a traditional 'issue' of models via 360 at agreed points or intervals (probably alternating weekly, with 1 practice issuing one week, the other the next. It is more like the approach that I've already used before with other disciplines. I know it is more suited to linked files where the overlap is minimimal (ie structures <> architecture <> MEP). In the early stages of this particular project the overlap between the two architectural offices will also be limited - but, as the project progresses we will have far more areas of overlap, and I think we will have to move away from linked models and towards dual access to a central revit model - which essentially becomes option 2....

Option 2 - Follow your suggestion and set up access from one office to the other where the central revit model will be hosted. This is an area that I know little about. We have an IT specialist who understands Revit, and Revit server, although I'm not sure that he is fully aware of the intricacies of setting this system up. I'll pass on your suggestions to him and see what he thinks.

I know that there are many other hurdles that we'll need to address - particularly around the who does and manages what, setting up families etc.

Thanks again,

Martin

I see this post is now a year old.  I work with Advance2000, and would like to know how you ultimately solved your collaboration problem.  We offer a cloud-based solution where the autodesk apps (Revit) are installed on cloud desktops, and accessed remotely from any computer.

If you'd like to call me, I'd like to learn more about how you solved your collaboration problem, and answer any questions you have about our solution.

thanks,
