Revit 2017 text upgrade issue

Progressively upgrading projects from 2016 to 2017 and experiencing issue with text and tags on sheets. Screenshots illustrate whats happening

Revit 2016 sheet - practice name text lines all justify OK (end of this clipped on LH side), shee number tags (project / sheet no / rev) all line up vertically and sheet title tags are OK

Revit 2017 sheet after project upgrade - practice name lines no longer left justified ( actually they were centred before and manually nudged but easy to rectify), sheet title tags have scaled and moved closer together and drawing number tags are displaced + altered width factor causing " Rev X " to wrap.

Clearly the font sizes have altered in the upgrade along with the width. Cant pin it entirely on the new text editor - these are all tags except the practice name lines, and tags dont use the new editor.

Any idea whats happening and anyone agree this is an Issue?

This is because in Revit 2017 they changed how text is measured. You can find more information in the "What's New?" section on the Revit 2017 help site, HERE.

Please mention Revit version, especially when uploading Revit files.

Thank you. It looks like this font height difference varies between fonts according the accent height difference to the caps height.

This is a very easy fix and its actually a windows setting:

Windows 7
1. Right click on desktop:
Select Personalize
2. Select Display - Lower Left
3. Select Smaller – 100%
It will require a Reboot of the machine.

Windows 10
1. Right click on desktop:
Select Display Settings
2. Adjust the slider bar at Change the size of text, apps and other items to 100%
3. Hit Apply

This will resolve all the text issues in Revit 2017

We have 180 Revit users and this is now the set protocol to have this set to 100% on their machines. Once we did that, the text issues went away.

Thanks for the suggestion but my font size was already set to 100% so did not fix my problem with font height changing.  Our advice is to not upgrade projects to 2017 and we are continuing to keep 2016 on our PCs.  It will be interesting resurrecting an old project in 2021 though! This is a line in the sand type change which will be hard to overcome as it has affected fundamental things like title blocks, tags, annotations, schedules.  It would be ideal if someone developed a script Add-in to change all text heights by a fixed ratio.

Per several folks, 2017.2 fixes the text size issue.

Thanks for the speedy reply.  However, I have just installed Revit 2017.2 and opened a previously upgraded project template.  All text in the title block families (embedded in the template) have been modified during hte upgrade process and require manual modification to fix them.  I have also tried upgrading a 2016 title block family from scratch and get the same result.  The problem remains.  Can you confirm if there is another workflow I am missing?

Thanks

I can see issues related to text size when upgrading from Revit 2016 to Revit 2017.Some have already been solved and  this issue remain.

I have been tracking this issue and I don't see any good ideas to solve except following the Autodesk decision.

Text measurement was changed so unless Autodesk adds an extra code or something when upgrade, I have to adjust all existing tags and title block to new rule.I will be very much hustle.

So here I just want to ask other users about what is the efficient workflow when shifting from old version of Revit.

Otherwise, should I wait it might be solved in the future?

I am still stuck with Revit2016 by the way and I am going to shift Revit2018 soon...

That is correct, you HAVE to update all your families. There is NO way around this. As per the link above this is a permenant change, there is nothing to "fix" with Revit regarding font size as stipulated here..

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-F57326A0-BCE1-44D6-A5FE-3F084258EE28

The confusion with this problem is that the text GLITCHES resulting from this change is what the updates fixed, NOT the size. Unfortunately, everyone classifies the glitches and bugs the same as the text upgrade as "text issues".

To make matters even more confusing, people are also talking about "text issues" regarding screen resolution problems due to 4K screens, Surface pros etc etc. This is again a DIFFERENT problem, relating to resolution which Autodesk made some attempt at improving in 2017.2

So, if you are only talking about the "issue" regarding the text upgrade by Autodesk, there is nothing to fix, simply update your families and keep going. You will have to do it eventually, 2018, 2019...they will all result in the same thing.

thank you for this very clear explanation to tell it like it is.  This is as I suspected.

I understand the need for Autodesk to make the text change and know it will be of benefit in the future, however I feel that they should have developed a tool or Dynamo routine to make the required changes / upgrades to the text within existing projects or in annotation family libraries.  It feels like they have underestimated the amount of time required to "fix" a project or project template when it is upgraded.

With all the extra money we are paying them for licensing, we should not have to put up with major loss of production time.  We have been promised better experiences and expect better experiences.

quick fix....change the text size so that it's 1/64" smaller than specified.

i.e.  3/32" height change it to 5/64"

Please tell how this issue can be registered as solved?

I have 2500 sheets in 29 Revit models that can´t be upgraded because every text size must be regulated with 0,1mm.

Is more than a weeks work, and nobody will pay for that work to be done.

So it not solved.

@ViviNyehuusAndersen

I am afraid to say, the only way to fix is just to change all fonts for desirable sizes in your projects and families.

If you use many texts in your projects, it is going to be a bit hard to fix but if you use a minimum amount of letters then what you need to do is edit all fonts in your families, focusing on tags and block titles.

And I actually don't recommend to change the version for old projects.

However, for newer projects, it is better to shift the newer version as soon as possible.

I was in charge to solve the issue so I started with comparing the size between 2016 and 2017.

This was also a great chance to reconsider the font itself as well.

So what I went through for modifying our template and families are below;

1, Compare the font sizes between 2016 and 2017.

Find an acceptable size for each situation, some can stay with newer bigger size and make the list for the change.

2, Working on your template

For the template, there are several portions you have to be aware of. text, dimension and model text.

Go to type property for above and change them all.

3, Working on your library for families

You have to look up if you use texts in your family, otherwise, work on Titleblock, Generic Annotation including tags.

Go to type property both text and label and change them as you need.

I used Dynamo to change the font to all Meiyou UI.

If you are familiar with Dynamo, you might be able to write the nodes to change font size as well.

I hope you can get pay for that cos it is not your fault and if it is necessary to update the projects,

the company should understand it or just keep it as the older version.

Best,

Yuki

I was able to change the 1/8" size text to 31/256" and that seemed to address all of the annotation formatting issues.

2021, still a problem.  I've had a Windows Surface Pro running windows 10 for about 5 years now and it has never made a sucessful .pdf from Revit (all other programs work just fine).  I've tried all of the screen size adjusting, changing fonts, re-installing everything, 2nd monitor, no monitor, detaching and reattaching the Surface screen, etc.  Adobe, Bluebeam, Nitro, Cutepdf, etc all produce the same results.  Fonts nearly double in size making the .pdf unuseable.  Somehow, text in dimensions and schedules are immune to whatever problem is happening.  See attached screen shot of the Revit screen before printing and a preview of the .pdf.
