Modify RVT files

Is it possible to modify RVT files with the Revit API without having Revit running? Is there an OpenDWG equivalent to Revit that will allow me to modify RVT files from other applications?

     Thank you for your response. Is there a roadmap for this? It's quite frustrating that Revit has such limited integration with other Autodesk software and that there isn't a non-application API available for developers to help bridge the gap.
