Delted Points Show up in AutoCAD

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hi! I'm working with 40 FLS files, i Deleted all of the points that are useless to me so I kept the ones I need. (Select Points, Delete... NO clipping). The problem is when I import the RCP file into AutoCAD. It comes with ALL (100%) points from where the first registration was done.

Any ideas of why is this happening? I only want to import to AutoCAD the points I kept after delete the rest, not all of them!

Thank you!

What version of AutoCAD and ReCap?  I know this has worked since 2015 but not sure about before that.  If you're in 2014 or older, you might be able to workaround by exporting to Unified RCS first - attach that single file and you won't see the deleted points.

What you're doing should work just fine in AutoCAD 2015+ though.

A few more things to check:

1. What version of ReCap are you using?  You can check from the home screen, under the 'i' icon.

2. Are you 'optimizing' the project before opening in AutoCAD?

We have confirmed that this works with latest ReCap (2.2.1) and AutoCAD 2016.  It is possible that there is a bug in AutoCAD 2015, but the above should help to confirm.

Another work around is to change the "deleted" points into a separate Region in Recap.
In Autocad, they will appear by default, but this Region can be switched of separatly. In Navisworks you cannot switch of this Region, so the only way is to export each Region as a unified cloud

Ryan,

I am using 3.0.1.5, navisworks 2016 13.4.1294.05, and autocad 2016 and still have this issue.

I close autocad and DELETE the scan from my navisworks model.

I then delete my points in recap, save and optimize, and append the scan back into navis, and the points are still there.

Is there something wrong with this workflow?

Hi Jason,

Unfortunately this is a backward-compatability issue.  The new 'optimize' feature in ReCap 2.x works by marking each deleted point in the RCS file.  But since this was developed after the 2016 products were released, that 'mark' isn't understood by those products.  This should start to work w/ the 2017 products, although some of this behavior depends on each product's schedule and other details.

To work around this problem, either

a) don't optimize, or

b) do a 'save as' and choose to fully remove the points.

Hope this helps,

Ryan

This still isn't working for me.

I'm on all 2017 products and have kept them up to date with the Desktop App.

I've opened my ReCAP file after making certain no one was using AutoCAD or Navisworks on files that were referencing the ReCAP file.

I deleted the points. Saved with Optimization. Closed ReCAP, opened ReCap and opened the file again. I was pleased to see the deleted points remained deleted.

In AutoCAD 2017, I opened a file referencing the point cloud and the deleted points were still there. Same with Navisworks Manage 2017.

Now I'm dissapointed again.

--- edit ---

Ah! I just discovered you can SAVEAS and overwrite the open file. ReCap asked if I wanted to remove deleted points. This seems to work. I was originally hesitant to SAVEAS due to the file sizes of the point clouds. But, since I can SAVEAS over the original, then that works. Seems silly though. Seems like just saving and optimizing should do this.

Hi @LyleHardin,

You're expectation is correct - the optimized points should not appear in AutoCAD nor Navis.  I will see if I can get more info from those product teams.

To bring the scans into autocad without the deleted points, you should be exporting your scan from recap as a unified scan. Deleting the points in the rcp file is a temporary thing until you make the deletion final in export. When you export to a unified .rcs or .rcp, the new file will not have the deleted points. Its the same thing you do when you are exporting a point cloud using a section box if you need to cut out parts of a scan to use in design.

Another way is to change the points you want to be invisible (or deleted) onto another region in Recap. In Autocad, you then can make that region invisible also.

Same issue here. ACAD 2017 recap 360 Pro version 3.0.0.52.

Deleted points still show up after all workarounds provided above.

If you export your final project from ReCap as unified rcs file and bring this file into AutoCad any removed or hidden points should not appear.

Works for us.

We delete the points (not just clip... actual delete).

We make absolutely, 100% certain, no one has a file open that uses that .rcp file. (Make sure no one has a file open in AutoCAD, Revit, or Inventor that has the .rcp in it.)

Save. Optimizing if required.

Then SaveAs as the same file, overwriting that file.

Now we open the AutoCAD file and the points are gone.

We've not had to export as an rcs lately. Not with ReCAP 360, anyway.

What we found out, when ours wasn't working, was that we had a file open on a machine no one was using. That file had that recap rcp in it.

One other thing to check - when you Save As, be sure to choose 'Remove points' option. This will remove the points permanently from the project and they will not reappear in AutoCAD or other apps.

I know this is a bit old and were nearly in 2020.  But there still is not a fix to this.  This may work for AutoCAD, but pulling the point cloud into a program like Edgewise, all of the point are back.  I've tried all of the above numerous times, stood on my head and whistled Tipperary but the only way to get it right is export the cleaned up rcp file as a .pts.  The problem with this though is Edgewise requires a non-unified scan set to run the extraction algorithm.
