Rendering Geppetto - GI/mentalRay/vRay etc

Hi everyone,

I'm just curious to hear what folks (especially in design viz) are doing when it comes to rendering Geppetto crowds in animations. There are a ton of YouTube videos showing screen captures in a Nitrous viewport, but I'm curious to know, when it comes to production animation, if people are just doing brute force frame-by-frame lighting solutions for the entire scene because of the moving characters, or excluding them from the lighting solution and faking it with include/exclude lights, or rendering characters in a separate pass and compositing. Would love for someone with a creative/practical/simple solution to share their techniques for those with limited render farms.
