okay this has happened on 3 machines with several different drawings and
different Operating systems..... i go to plot to the HP designjet 700
plotter, it full previews okay, then i go to plot it.. and it regenerates
the viewport then

Error opening output stream.

i can restart acad or even try to plot it again and it goes... why is this
intermittent problem just starting?

the service packs and windows are updated.. all machines use the "new"
driver via a pc3.

i tried the knowledge base but no useable answers there

ID: TS50280
Applies to: AutoCAD LT® 2002,
AutoCAD® 2000,
AutoCAD® 2000i,
AutoCAD® 2002,
Autodesk Field Survey

Issue

The following error message is displayed when you plot a drawing or when you
configure a plotter:

Error Opening Output Stream

Solution

This error typically occurs when the program is having difficulty
communicating with a printer or plotter and most often occurs when it is
configured to use the internal (HDI) driver. This problem is encountered
most often when the program is unable to send data to the specified
printer/plotter or port. This situation may occur when

You have insufficient rights to access the port or plotter
The port is not ready
The port is invalid
To resolve this issue, you must ensure that your computer can communicate
specifically and successfully with the printer or plotter in question. To
determine whether this is the case

Print from another application to the same device on the same port.
Send a Windows® test page to the same device on the same port.
Copy a plot file to the same device on the same port.
After you have verified a method that works, you must configure the program
to use that method. For example, if you have verified that you can print
using the Windows test page utility, you should configure AutoCAD® or
AutoCAD LT® to print using the Windows System Printer driver. Or if you have
verified that you can print by copying a plot file to the port, you should
configure AutoCAD to print using Autospool.

Jon,

I got this error yesterday when attempt to plot to a DesignJet 600, using
the internal HDI driver.
The problem stemmed from the fact that in Windows I had several system
printers setup for this plotter as well, these were all using bogus ports.
When I removed these bogus system printers and installed the correct system
printer and the error when away. Not sure why this solved it but it did.

Jon,

How are you connected to this plotter?
Is it connected to a server that is shared to the rest of the network?
Is it using a JetDirect Card?
Connected directly to you machine?

How ever you are connected you are running into communication problems
between AutoCAD and the printer or printer share.
